Alabama's First Grade Standards

  • AL.1. Standard: Exploring Our Community and State In Grade 1, students begin to recognize that the heritage, culture, and talents of others are worthy of respect.
    • 1.1. Objective: History Identify past and present modes of air, land, and water transportation.
      • 1.1.1. Grade Level Example: Identifying past and present forms of communication.
      • 1.1.2. Grade Level Example: Identifying past and present types of apparel.
      • 1.1.3. Grade Level Example: Identifying past and present types of technology.
      • 1.1.4. Grade Level Example: Identifying past and present types of recreation.
      • 1.1.5. Grade Level Example: Identifying primary documents of the past and present.
    • 1.2. Objective: History Describe how primary sources serve as historical records of families and communities.
    • 1.3. Objective: Geography/History Identify historical events and celebrations in communities and cities throughout Alabama.
    • 1.4. Objective: Economics Describe the role of money in everyday life.
      • 1.4.1. Grade Level Example: Explaining differences between wants and needs.
      • 1.4.2. Grade Level Example: Explaining concepts of saving and borrowing.
      • 1.4.3. Grade Level Example: Explaining differences between buyers and sellers.
    • 1.5. Objective: Economics/Geography Label human-made and natural resources in Alabama.
    • 1.6. Objective: Geography Identify land masses, bodies of water, and other physical features of Earth on maps and globes.
      • 1.6.1. Grade Level Example: Explaining uses of cardinal directions on the compass rose.
      • 1.6.2. Grade Level Example: Measuring distances using nonstandard means.
    • 1.7. Objective: Geography/Political Science Identify ways to take personal action to protect the environment.
    • 1.8. Objective: Economics/Geography Identify how occupational and recreational opportunities in Alabama and local communities are affected by the physical environment.
    • 1.9. Objective: Geography/History Identify traditions of a variety of cultures in Alabama and local communities.
      • 1.9.1. Grade Level Example: Identifying common and unique characteristics of individuals in societal groups, including age, religious beliefs, ethnicity, disability, and gender.
    • 1.10. Objective: Political Science Discuss civic responsibilities of participating members of a community and state.
      • 1.10.1. Grade Level Example: Discussing the meaning of patriotism.
    • 1.11. Objective: Political Science Identify roles and responsibilities of leaders within the community and state.
      • 1.11.1. Grade Level Example: Recognizing how laws protect rights and property.
      • 1.11.2. Grade Level Example: Identifying reasons for having rules at home and at school.
