African Americans and the Civil War

Using photograph collections focused on the Civil War and African Americans, this workshop identifies ways that students can use elements of the Library of Congress’s American Memory online collection as a basis for historical investigation. Participants develop an understanding of different searching strategies that are appropriate to teach to elementary and middle school students. This workshop offers strategies for analyzing images and for incorporating American Memory collections into different types of learning experiences ranging from one-day lessons to long-term projects. All materials, including a workshop facilitator’s guide can be downloaded for free.
