The Second Wave (Immigration 1850-1920)

This workshop developed by Stanlee Brimberg, Bank Street College of Education, examines the question, what was America like for immigrants arriving at the turn of the century? Designed for upper elementary and middle school teachers, this workshop helps teachers plan lessons using primary documents, develop strategies to make text and images more accessible, and discuss the practicality of students researching topics on the internet and in the American Memory online collection. All materials, including a workshop facilitator’s guide can be downloaded for free.
