Organized in 1986, the Society strives to preserve the heritage of Smithsburg and the surrounding area, and to transmit it intact to future generations in an authentic and meaningful manner. In a larger context, the Society attempts to instill a sense of civic pride in all residents of the town through recognition of significant local contributions and achievements which began when the first settlement was founded in 1787.

Visitors to the Society's Museum can learn about Nebraska's early pioneers and life on the American Prairie. The Museum offers displays on and including authentic pioneer artifacts from the 1870s, the history of the American Railroad, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and more. Political exhibits cover Senator George W. Norris and the three former Governors from McCook: Frank B. Morrison, Ralph G. Brooks, and U.S. Senator E. Benjamin Nelson. An extensive collection of photographs offers visitors a glance into Nebraska history.

The Society's museum offers an extensive rock and petrified wood exhibit, donated by the museum's founders, William and Etta Schluenz. Also in the museum is an array of trinkets and gadgets collected and donated by Waterville's citizens and the two-headed calf, which lived for 10 days after birth.

The Cultural Heritage Museum focuses on exploring the history of the more than 200,000 African American soldiers and their 7,000 white officers who fought with the Union forces in the American Civil War, with emphasis on the U.S. Colored troops from North Carolina; it also pays tribute to African American military veterans from all wars; Carl Long and the Negro Baseball League players; local heroes; and African American history in general.
