Immigration, Religion, and Culture on New York's Lower East Side

Description

This workshop will "treat the Lower East Side, a neighborhood known for its immigrant history, as a primary source. Walking tours, lectures, and photography will bring teachers and a diverse group of scholars together to learn about how various ethnic, religious and immigrant groups adapted their religion and culture to America. The workshop aims to provide teachers with the tools and inspiration to bring the Lower East Side back to their classrooms." Specific topics will include "Eldridge Street Synagogue and Religious Adaptation," "Chinatown and the Development of a Port Culture on the Bowery/Chatham Square," "The African Burial Ground and African American Communities," "Irish and Italian Immigration and Foodways," and "The Interaction Between East European Jews and the German Christians on the Lower East Side."

<p>Jackdaws is for-profit and produces hands-on primary source materials for upper elementary and middle school students. </p>

<p>These sets include reproductions of primary sources, including maps, photographs, letters, diaries, and posters. Each set of sources is accompanied by full descriptions of the documents, timelines, and broadsheet essays – historians’ detailed narratives of the topics presented in journal-like formats. There is also a study guide/lesson plan with every set that includes worksheets, activities, and assessments.</p>

<p>Units in American history are available in the following categories: New York state history, California state history, American Indian History, Colonial America, Economics, Government and Civics, Immigration, Slavery and the Civil War, Westward Expansion, and Conflicts and Social Issues.</p>

Elkhorn State Park [MT]

Description

During its heyday in the 1880s, the mining town of Elkhorn swelled to a population of 2,500. The boom ended in 1890 with the drop in silver prices and residents moved to other areas. They left behind two impressive structures, Fraternity Hall and Gillian Hall, which have been preserved as outstanding examples of frontier architecture.

David Thompson State Historic Site [ND]

Description

This site lies near the supposed route followed by trappers and traders en route between Canadian trading posts and the Indian villages along the Missouri River. It is named after the famous English explorer, scientist, and cartographer, David Thompson. There is a marker on the site.

Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park [MT]

Description

The old Anaconda Copper Company smelter stack, completed in 1919, is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world at 585 feet. The inside diameter is 75 feet at bottom, tapering to 60 feet at the top. In comparison, the Washington Monument is 555 feet tall. The stack dominates the landscape like the Company once dominated the area's economic life. Since the smelter closed in 1980, the stack has become a symbol of the challenges that face communities dependent on finite resources.

Santa Claus Museum [TX]

Description

The Santa Claus Museum presents and interprets over 1,500 Santa Claus figurines. The museum discusses the creation of the modern face of Santa Claus by Coca-Cola, Montgomery Wards, authors, and artists. Items in the collection include Thomas Nast and Norman Rockwell prints, vintage postcards, and figurines by Duncan Royale, Coca-Cola, Fitz and Floyd, Steiff, and PEZ.

The museum offers exhibits, interactive kiosks, and short films.
