Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site [SC]

Description

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site commemorates the site at which English settlers landed in 1670. From there, they established a settlement which would eventually birth the plantation system, the Carolina Colony, and a major maritime commerce center. The site includes a 12-room museum; a 17th-century replica maritime vessel, the trading ketch Adventure; a natural habitat zoo; reconstructed fortifications; and 80 acres of gardens. The zoo houses animal species which lived in South Carolina circa 1670.

The site offers interactive exhibits; musket, cannon, and open hearth cooking demonstrations; hands-on activities; guided and self-guided educational programs which correspond to state educational standards; audio tours; gardens; interpretive trails; and picnic areas. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for use on site.

Maturango Museum [CA]

Description

The Maturango Museum presents the geology and cultural and natural histories of the Northern Mojave Desert. Artifacts on display include mammoth and bison fossils, items from the Native American populations of California, a Sidewinder missile, and local minerals. The grounds hold a desert garden.

The museum offers exhibits, a hands-on children's area, a garden, lectures, concerts, and an art gallery.

Monroe County Historical Society and Museum [MO]

Description

The Monroe County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Monroe County, Missouri. To this end, the society operates a research center and museum. The museum is located within the Monroe County Courthouse, and presents information and artifacts relevant to local history. Collection highlights include prehistoric stone tools and historical weaponry.

The society offers exhibits, research library access, and research assistance. Museum tours can be arranged with advance notice. Research assistance requires payment. The website offers an online collections catalog and transcriptions of historic data.

Waseca County Historical Society and Museum [MN]

Description

The Waseca County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Waseca County, Minnesota. To this end, the society operates a research center and a museum of local history.

The society offers exhibits, research library access, and research assistance. Non-members are charged a fee for library use; and anyone requesting research assistance will be charged as well. The website offers a family history database, a word search, and a cross word puzzle.

Scottsdale Historical Museum [AZ]

Description

The Scottsdale Historical Museum is dedicated to recounting the history of Scottsdale, Arizona. Their permanent collection contains items from the Scott family, the founders of the town. Temporary exhibits include late 19th century transportation items and other items from the time of Scottsdale’s founding (1888).

Tours are docent-led and admission is free. Educational programs and school tours aren't offered so the teacher will have to arrange plans with the museum to meet his/her students' needs.
