Sam Houston Schoolhouse [TN]

Description

The Sam Houston Schoolhouse is named for the soldier, statesman, and pioneer from East Tennessee. Built of hewn poplar logs, it is representative of field schools of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Desks are cleverly converted from the window apertures, and a seven-foot ceiling hovers over hewn log seats.

The schoolhouse offers exhibits.

Adams County Historical Society [PA]

Description

The Adams County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Adams County, PA, and its people. To this end, the society operates a museum, located within the dormitory of the first U.S. Lutheran seminary, founded in 1826. The building later served as a Civil War hospital. Exhibit topics include iron works, social classes, pre-history, county development between 1745 and 1945, the Civil War and Battle of Gettysburg, mortuary equipment and mourning practices, religion, education, children's toys, furniture making, seminary history, and circa 1900 dorm life. Other holdings include more than 200,000 photographs and negatives, manuscripts, and county records.

The society offers exhibits, guided museum tours, guided behind-the-scenes tours, research library access, and research services. Appointments are required for all tours to ensure docent availability, with tours only being offered to groups of 10 or more. Students and members may use the research library free of charge. A fee is charged for research conducted upon request.

Pilgrim Hall Museum [MA]

Description

The Pilgrim Hall Museum presents the possessions and history of the Pilgrims. Collection highlights include the only portrait featuring a Pilgrim to be painted from life, the Bible of William Bradford (1590-1657), and the sword of Myles Standish (c. 1584-1656). The museum also presents Wampanoag history and a wide variety of paintings depicting important historical U.S. events.

The museum offers exhibits, as well as guided tours for groups. Reservations are required for guided tours.

Mary Todd Lincoln House [KY]

Description

The Mary Todd Lincoln House is the first site to have been restored in the memory of a First Lady. The 14-room Georgian home was originally built as an inn, completed in 1806, but entered the Todd family in 1832. Mary Todd (1818-1882) lived on this site for seven years (1832-1839). The current furnishings of the home are based on the inventory list of the property's auction following Robert S. Todd's death. Pieces displayed include those previously owned by the Todd and Lincoln families.

The house offers period rooms and tours for students.

The Polson Museum [WA]

Description

The Polson Museum seeks to preserve and share the history of Grays Harbor, Washington. The museum is housed in a 1926 26-room mansion—with 17 rooms housing exhibits. Also on-site is a replic of the Polson Logging Company blacksmith shop, which contains tools original to the location. Collection highlights include more than 2,500 historic photographs.

Lambertville Historical Society [NJ]

Description

The Lambertville Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Lambertville, New Jersey and the surrounding area. The society is headquartered in the James Wilson Marshall House. Today, the Marshall House serves as both a historic house museum, a local history museum, and a society archives.

The house offers guided tours by appointment, exhibits, and an archives. The society further offers walking tours of the town monthly during the summer months or by appointment. Hanover Area Historical Society [PA]

Description

The Hanover Area Historical Society was founded in 1965 by local citizens in order to preserve the historical heritage of Hanover and the surrounding area. The society maintains two historic house museums, the Warehime-Myers Mansion and the Neahs House. The Neahs House is currently being converted into a local history museum.

Both houses offer guided tours on Saturdays or by appointment. The society also offers special events including concerts and walking tours, and local history exhibits are offered in the Neahs House. National Council for the Traditional Arts [MD]

Description

The NCTA is is focused on the preservation of folk and traditional arts in the United States, and maintains archives of folk music, dance, crafts, and stories. While national in scope, the National Council for the Tradition Arts (NCTA) is very cognizant of its local corporate responsibility, and so provides a variety of services for the local Maryland and Washington DC area.

The NCTA puts on folk festivals throughout the country, presents traditional art touring programs, and works with local schools to present traditional arts to schoolchildren. The website offers information about all of the programs offered by the NCTA and an events calendar.

Manhattan Beach Historical Society & Museum [CA]

Description

The Manhattan Beach Historical Society is a not for profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Manhattan Beach, California.
