The California Mission as Symbol and Myth

Description

An overview of the history of Catholic missions in California, from their establishment during imperial Spain's colonization of the region through the push for their restoration and preservation in the 1800s. The presentation places an emphasis on the changing role and popular perceptions of the missions and on their effects on Native American populations.

Center for Jewish History [NY]

Description

The Center for Jewish History houses five major Jewish cultural institutions: the American Jewish Historical Society, the American Sephardi Federation, the Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. The institutions offer galleries of exhibits and access to their collected archives.

Description

The Kansas Cosmophere and Space Center introduces visitors to the sweep of the Cold War Space Race and space exploration.

Texas Maritime Museum

Description

The Texas Maritime Museum provides exhibits on the history and technology of offshore petroleum production and transportation; the history and development of Texas seaports, maritime communities, and maritime commerce along the Gulf; the exploration and settlement history of the Texas Gulf Coast, including by the Spanish and the French; and an overview of the Texas seafood and fishing industry.

The museum offers exhibits, tours for school groups, in-class outreach presentations, traveling trunk "treasure chests" for loan, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History [TX]

Description

The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History presents the story of a cultural crossroads of the New World. With a confluence of natural history, science, people, and environments, the South Texas area has served as a stage for the ongoing discovery of the Americas. The museum's exhibits explore natural history and South Texas history, and include full-size, functioning reconstructions of Christopher Columbus's three ships.

The museum offers exhibits, self-guided and guided tours for school groups, tours of the Columbus Ships, traveling trunks available for rent, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Florida Holocaust Museum

Description

The Museum honors the memory of millions of innocent men, women, and children who suffered or died in the Holocaust. It is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides.

Japanese American National Museum [CA]

Description

The museum shares the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Through its comprehensive collection of Japanese American objects, images, and documents, as well as multifaceted exhibitions, educational programs, documentaries, and publications, the National Museum shares the Japanese American story with a national and international audience.
