Monterey History and Art Association and Museum [CA]

Description

The Monterey History and Art Association is dedicated to preserving the history of Monterey, CA. To this end, the association has two main projects, preserving historic homes and structures in Monterey and operating the Monterey Maritime and History Museum. The museum opened in 1971 and today holds almost 6000 artifacts and 50,000 photographs and papers. The association also releases a quarterly newsletter, "The Beacon."

Hollis Historical Society [NH]

Description

"Our purpose is to stimulate interest in the history of Hollis, New Hampshire, to acquire and preserve memorabilia and historical data significant to the Town of Hollis, to present interesting and informative programs for our members and friends, and to maintain the Ruth E. Wheeler House." The Hollis Historical Society maintains two museums, the Wheeler House - which is a historic house museum focusing on life in Hollis in the early 20th century, and the Always Ready Engine House, which focuses on the history of firefighting in Hollis and firefighting technology.

Appanoose County Historical & Coal Mining Museum [IA]

Description

The Appanoose County Historical & Coal Mining Museum is located in the old post office in Centerville, Iowa. The museum features a variety of exhibits, including exhibits on coal mining, pioneer life, local businesses, the mormon trail, and the local American Indian population. The museum is open to the public every Sunday during the summer months and by appointment.

Brockton Fire Museum [MA]

Description

"Opened in May of 1992, the Brockton Fire Museum was constructed for the purpose of preserving the proud history of fire fighting in the Brockton area. The artfully designed building, with wide pumpkin pine floors and subdued lighting, effectively conveys the atmosphere of a classic Brockton fire station during Victorian times." Visitors to the museum can enjoy thousands of firefighting artifacts, as well as a restored 1850s Hand-Tub Pumper and a memorial to the 13 firemen who were killed in the Strand Theater disaster.

Southeastern Railway Museum [GA]

Description

"The Southeastern Railway Museum (SRM) occupies a 34-acre site in Duluth, Georgia, in northeast suburban Atlanta. In operation since 1970, SRM features about 90 items of rolling stock including historic Pullman cars and classic steam locomotives." All exhibits are restored railroad cars and locomotives, ranging from the private car of President Harding to the diesel-electric locomotive that powered the Crescent train before Amtrak assumed control of the train.

The site offers information about all pieces of rolling stock currently held by the museum as well as pictures of roughly half of the rolling stock. In addition, the site has a several photo galleries of the depot, an online gift shop, an events calendar, and visitor information.

Louisiana State Fire Museum [LA]

Description

The Louisiana State Fire Museum is housed in the David Crocket Fire Hall. Built in 1859, the fire hall is the home of the David Crockett Volunteer Fire Company which was organized in 1841 and today is the oldest continually operating volunteer fire company in the United States. The museum has two floors of exhibits which showcase items of historical valley to the David Crockett Fire Company and the history of firefighting.

The site is part of the greater Gretna Historical Society website, and so offers information about all of the museums and historic homes owned and operated by the society.

Eustis Historical Museum & Preservation Society [FL]

Description

The Eustis Historical Society is dedicated towards preserving and showcasing Eustis area history through the Eustis Historical Museum. The museum is located in the Clifford House, which was built in 1911, and remains much the same today as it was when it was first built. Exhibits in the museum mainly focus on the early history of Eustis, Florida, which was dominated by the citrus industry. In addition, visitors can view photographs of early residents of Eustis.

Union Fire Company No. 1 Museum [PA]

Description

The Union Fire Company No. 1 boasts a proud history of over 215 years, and continues to serve the Carlisle, PA area today. The Fire Company maintains a museum located in part of its old station, which was built in the late 19th century. The museum encompasses two floors and contains artifacts dating back to the founding of the Company in 1789. Visitors can enjoy an impressive collection of firefighting artifacts ranging from vintage firefighting equipment to patches and photos chronicling the history of the company.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum [NY]

Description

The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the whaling industry, especially the history of the industry in the Long Island Area. The museum was opened in 1942, and offers an archive of historical documents in addition to the variety of exhibits that it puts on throughout the year. Finally, the museum also offers fully customizable educational programs, which can be adapted to classes of any age or level.

The site offers an events calendar, information on the educational programs offered by the museum, information on current exhibits, and an online gift shop.
