Description

The Levittown Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Levittown, NY. To this end, the society operates the Levittown History Museum. Artifacts on exhibit include furnishings and appliances dating to the late 1940s. Levittown was established in 1947 as a low-cost community with mass-produced housing available to veterans. It subsequently served as the model for countless post-World War II suburban neighborhoods.

Antique Boat Museum [NY]

Description

The Antique Boat Museum offers a wide variety of exhibits on New York's maritime history. La Duchesse, a luxury houseboat once owned by George Boldt, manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, is open for touring. Other exhibits examine topics such as the history of the powerboat, canoes, toy boats, and boat crafting.

The museum offers school tours (self-guided or docent-led) of their vessels and the museum, some including art projects and/or boat rides. Outreach programs, travelling trunks, and curriculum materials are also available.

Linwood Historical Society and Museums [NJ]

Description

The Linwood Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Linwood, New Jersey. To this end the society operates the Leedsville School Museum and the Jim Kirk Maritime Museum. Built in 1873, the Leedsville School has served as a school, city hall, and public library. Today, it hosts a museum of local history. Collection highlights include the original school bell and a 45 star flag. The maritime museum presents oystering and clamming tools, shipwright tools, and ship models.

Greater Cape May Historical Society and the Colonial House [NJ]

The Greater Cape May Historical Society operates the Colonial House. The Colonial House was built prior to the Revolutionary War. Memucan Hughes, member of an area whaling family, used the site as a tavern during the Revolution. His eldest son later used the building as a residence. The site presents the Hughes' life in historic Cape May, New Jersey.

North Tonawanda History Museum [NY]

Description

The North Tonawanda History Museum presents the history of North Tonawanda, New York. Particular emphasis is given to 19th- and 20th-century shipping and manufacturing, as well as immigration. Other major collection categories are Erie County, the Niagara River, and military history. Common area ethnic groups are well-represented in the collection; and include the Lebanese, Irish, Italian, German, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, and Slovak.

The museum offers exhibits and walking tours for students or the general public. Tours are by reservation.

Brockport Fire Museum [NY]

Description

The Brockport Fire Museum presents global firefighting history. Collection highlights include an 1825 leather bucket and representatives of the three types of pumpers—the piston pump, centrifugal pump, and rotary gear pump.

President James Buchanan's Wheatland [PA]

Description

In 1856 diplomat and statesman James Buchanan was elected the 15th President of the United States at the age of 65. Today, visitors to President James Buchanan's Wheatland can learn more about Pennsylvania's only United States President and explore the story of his presidency; the fractious political issues of the times; and his private life in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and at his Wheatland estate.

Landmark Society of Western New York [NY]

The Landmark Society of Western New York is dedicated to preserving western New York's rich architectural and historical heritage. The society owns and operates two historic house museums, the Campbell-Whittlesey House and the Stone-Talon House. The society is headquartered in the Hoyt-Potter House in Rochester, New York.
