Heritage Ohio [OH]

Description

Heritage Ohio is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting organizations and individuals in preserving Ohio history. Heritage Ohio specifically focuses on preservation and downtown revitalization. To this end, Heritage Ohio has a number of statewide programs, such as the Main Street Program, which focuses on commercial district revitalization in communities across the state. In addition, Heritage Ohio puts out several publications, including a newsletter and fact sheets designed to aid in potential preservationists.

The site offers detailed information on all Heritage Ohio programs, basic information regarding the organization itself, and online access to Heritage Ohio's publications.

Jarrot Mansion State Historic Site [IL]

Description

Nicholas Jarrot was a French born entrepreneur and land speculator who also served as a local judge and militia officer. Jarrot began construction of his mansion in 1807, and was one of the earliest buildings built with brick in the state of Illinois. In addition, the home is notable for its use of the American Federal architecture style, not the more common French Colonial style prevalent in the midwest during the time period. Currently, the house is under restoration and is only opened periodically to the public for special events.

The site provides visitors with historical information regarding the house, current information on the restoration projects, a photo gallery featuring nine historical and present photographs of the mansion, a calendar of events, and links to local historical sites and organizations.

Indiana State Museum [IN]

Description

The Indiana State Museum explore Indiana's past, present and future through artistic, cultural, and scientific exhibits starting with the birth of Earth and tracing Hoosier history into the 21st century.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and educational and recreational events. The website offers visitor information and digital exhibits and digital access to the museum's collections. Finally, the site contains links to all of Indiana's state historic sites.

Ridge Historical Society [IL]

Description

The Ridge Historical Society is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1971 in order to preserve and promote the history of the Chicago neighborhoods of Beverly Hills, Morgan Park, and Washington Heights. The Ridge Historic District is one of the largest urban districts on the National Register of Historic Places. The Society is especially focused on preserving the architectural history of the area along with personal history of area residents.

The site offers historical information in the form of feature stories that explore one area of history in depth. In addition, the site offers information about upcoming and past events, as well as general information about the Society.

Levi Coffin Home State Historic Site [IN]

Description

The Levi Coffin Home was a stop on the Underground Railroad in the years preceding the civil war, and treats visitors to a tour of Indiana history through hidden doors, false-bottomed wagons, and other methods used to hide escaped slaves. This brick house in Newport, Indiana, was the home to Levi and Catherine Coffin, North Carolina Quakers who opposed slavery and helped more than 2,000 slaves reach safety.

The site offers very minimal information for visitors regarding the house.

Taliesin Preservation Inc. [WI]

Description

The Taliesin Estate is Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin home. At this fabulous estate, visitors can appreciate all of the architectural character that the rest of Wright's works exhibited. In fact, this estate can essentially be called the "source" of all of Wright's later architecture. It was at Taliesin that Wright experimented with different ideas, ideas that were then applied to the buildings upon which Wright's considerable reputation rests. Taliesin Preservation Inc.
is dedicated to preserving this impressive architectural marvel and the source of all of Frank Lloyd Wright's later architectural works.

Illinois State Fire Museum [IL]

Description

The Illinois State Fire Museum is located in Springfield, Illinois, was opened in 1994 and is owned and operated by the State Fire Marshal. The Fire Museum houses one of the world's largest collections of patches, with patches from throughout Illinois, the United States and even Europe. The museum also holds several pieces of antique firefighting gear, along with a children's interactive, educational computer room. Here, children can learn about fire safety. The museum is available to the public by appointment.

The site offers links to the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall with information about fire safety. No information beyond a general overview is available on the museum.

Hubbardston Area Historical Society

Description

" The purpose of the Hubbardston Area Historical Society shall be to promote the preservation, understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultrual heritage of Hubbardston and the surrounding area by:
1. encouraging historical and genealogical study and research,
2. collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting historical and cultural objects, artifacts and sites,
3. encouraging public participation in the activities of the society through publications, programs and the preservation of archives and historical collections and to encourage the establishment and operation of a local historical museum."

Pioneer-Krier Museum

Description

When the Clark County Historical Society was organized in 1939, it was with the understanding that the society should aquire a building to house the relics in their possession. The current Pioneer-Krier Museum was built in 1968, and has served as the museum ever since, with an addition added in 1974 in order to house two of Harold Krier's airplanes.

The site offers virtual tours for all exhibits offered by the museum as well as general museum information.

Heritage Hill State Historical Park

Description

"Heritage Hill is a living history museum devoted to the preservation of its buildings and artifacts and the interpretation of the history of Northeast Wisconsin and its people. Our purpose is to provide an educational experience that encourages visitor awareness, understanding and appreciation of the history of the region."
