Osborne Homestead Museum [CT]

Description

Adjacent to the rolling hills and open meadows of Osbornedale State Park, the recently renovated Osborne Homestead Museum encompasses the house and grounds of the former Frances Osborne Kellogg Estate. Originally constructed in the mid-1800s, the house was enlarged and completely remodeled in the Colonial Revival style during the 1920s. Its restored interior now displays the original contents of the estate, which constitutes a significant collection of antiques and fine arts.

The site offers tours, exhibits, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Hancock Shaker Village [MA]

Description

The 20-acre Hancock Shaker Village was once a thriving Shaker community, but is now an outdoors museum which presents the history and culture of the Shakers. Collections include 20 historic buildings and more than 22,200 artifacts including furniture, tools, vernacular equipment, household objects, art, textiles, graphics, and archival documents. Shaker beliefs included using dance as a communal form of communication with God, equality of the sexes, group ownership, and celibacy.

The village offers self-guided tours; docents; exhibits; animal encounters; traditional craft demonstrations; a program on Shaker music; a children's discovery room; 19th-century-style lessons in a historic schoolhouse; guided tours of the 1830s Brick Dwelling, 1826 Round Stone Barn, and Laundry/Machine Shop; specialty guided tours; curriculum-based tour outlines for teachers; heirloom gardens; heritage livestock; research library access; a hiking trail; cafe; and a picnic area. Guided tours are only available between late November and mid April. During that time, self-guided tours are unavailable. Appointments are required for research library access.

Historic Deerfield [MA]

Description

In historic Deerfield, visitors can step back into early America as they tour 11 house museums, exploring hundreds of years of history along an original, mile-long street. Two houses, the Stebbins House and Sheldon House, are available for self-guided tours all day during the regular season.

Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site (Ft. William Henry) [ME]

Description

The Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site chronicles the history of one of northern New England's earliest settlements. Dating back to the 1620s, Pemaquid is located on an old Native American village, and contains Fort William Henry, which guarded the waters of mid-coast Maine.

The State Historic Site offers exhibits in the reconstructed Fort William Henry, and guided tours. The website offers a brief history of the site and basic visitor information.

Old Bourne Village [MA]

Description

Old Bourne Village is the historic heart of Bourne, Massachusetts, and consists of well over 20 historic structures, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. The village has several structures which are open to visitors year round, including a Blacksmith's shop and the Briggs-McDermott house. The village is operated by the Bourne Historical Society.

The village offers periodic guided tours, as well as self-guided tours year round. The website offers a brief history of all of the village's historic structures, as well as an events calendar for the Bourne Historical Society and basic visitor information.

Noah Webster House and West Hartford Historical Society [CT]

Description

Built circa 1748, the Noah Webster House is the restored birthplace and childhood home of the lexicographer Noah Webster (1758-1843). Today, the museum building includes the historical house, library, archives, and a modern exhibition gallery.

The house and society offer exhibits, tours, reference library access, educational programs, and recreational and educational events.

Martha's Vineyard Museum [MA]

Description

The Martha's Vineyard Museum houses centuries of the island's history dating back to the pre-Columbian period. Its collections relate to all aspects of life on Martha's Vineyard, and include agricultural, hunting and fishing tools, costumes, decoys, artwork, armaments, fossils, maritime and whaling related tools and more. The museum is steward of the Gay Head, East Chop and Edgartown lighthouses.

Brattleboro Historical Society [VT]

Description

The Brattleboro Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Brattleboro, Vermont, officially chartered in 1753. The area's history includes the musical instrument and printing industries, as well as the original English settlement in Vermont. The society operates two exhibit displays. The society's headquarters is located within the 1883 Municipal Center, which once served as an area high school.

The society offers exhibits, outreach lectures, research library access, and research services. A fee is charged for research assistance. The website offers more than 700 historic photographs, living history narratives, and illustrated articles on area history.
