The Meeker Mansion [WA]

Description

The Meeker Mansion was completed in 1890 and is a fabulous example of Italianate Victorian architecture. The home was constructed for Eliza Jane, the wife of Ezra Meeker, who had wanted a nicer home after a trip to England. The Meekers lived in the home until Eliza Jane's death in 1909, at which point Ezra abandoned the house. Today, the home serves as a historic house museum, and gives visitors a glimpse of life in Washington at the turn of the century.

Hood River County Historical Museum [OR]

Description

Hood River County Historical Museum presents the socio-cultural history of Hood River County, Oregon. Topics addressed within permanent exhibits include the daily lives of pioneer, Native American, and area ethnic groups, as well as Japanese Internment after Pearl Harbor.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, self-guided tours, activity tours, research assistance, a traveling trunk on the local fruit industry, and several school tour options. All guided tours are customized to group needs. Payment is required for research assistance.

Nethercutt Collection and Museum [CA]

Description

The Nethercutt Collection consists of more than 200 vintage automobiles, as well as mechanical musical instruments, hood ornaments, antique furniture, and musical pocket watches. Automobile makers represented include McFarlan, De Dion Bouton, Maybach, Deusenberg, and Rolls-Royce. At any given time, 30 automobiles are on display.

The collection offers 2-hour guided tours. Reservations are required. Jeans, shorts, and children under 12 are not permitted.

Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge [OR]

Description

The Cape Meares Lighthouse & Wildlife Refuge is located west of Portland along the Oregon coast. The park is home to the Cape Meares Lighthouse, miles of hiking trails, an informational kiosk, the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, and the famous Octopus Tree.

A.J. Comstock Fire Museum [CA]

Description

This unique fire museum is located in Ventura, California, and is open year round. Visitors simply walk to the outside of the museum and can view all displays and exhibits through the glass windows on the sides of the building. The museum is composed of interpretive signs and firefighting equipment designed to give visitors a glimpse into the history of firefighting.

The Blackhawk Automotive Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of automobiles in the United States. Marston House Museum [CA]

Description

The Marston House Museum is one of San Diego's finest examples of the Arts and Crafts architectural movement. Completed in 1905 for prominent merchant and civic leader, George W. Marston, and his family, this 8,500 square-foot home is surrounded by four acres of rolling lawns, manicured formal gardens, and canyon pathways. It is furnished with Mission-style pieces like those designed by brothers Gustav, Leopold, and John George Stickley, and a variety of decorative pottery, paintings, and textiles created by world-renown Craftsman artisans.

California State Capitol Museum

Description

Home of the California Legislature since 1869, the State Capitol underwent a major renovation that restored much of the building's original look. Visitors can tour the restored historic offices of the Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Governor of the State of California. The building features exhibits and tours—and possibly an opportunity to watch the legislators debate a bill or cast a vote.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, film screenings, and occasional recreational and educational events.
