Historypin

Overview

Historypin is a digital mapping tool that enables users to create a collection of items and anchor it to a digital map. This platform helps visualize historical events by connecting primary sources to specific locations, making it particularly effective for demonstrating local history’s relevance to students.

Getting Started

Users begin by creating a free account. After logging in, users can start a collection by naming and describing items based on location, add contributors, and specify contact information before saving the collection to the map. A key feature permits users to add photographs to collections created by others. Users can explore Historypin by location, topic, keyword, or date, then locate relevant collections to which they can contribute new items.

Example

Notable collections include the National Archives collection featuring over 2,000 pins, a World War I remembrance collection, and an Abraham Lincoln assassination collection. In classroom settings, educators can have students gather photos from grandparents and map them using Historypin, allowing exploration of how photographed locations have changed over time.
