New Bern Firemen's Museum [NC]

Description

Established in 1955, the New Bern Firemen's Museum seeks to preserve the history of firefighting in New Bern. The exhibits are original pieces of equipment from the city's past. New Bern was the first city in North Carolina to charter a fire company, and one of the first in the nation; and the city's firefighters hold many world records.

Walter Elwood Museum at Guy Park Manor[NY]

Description

The museum is housed in a 100-year-old brick building which formerly served as an elementary school. Its assortment of approximately 25,000 artifacts falls into four categories: multicultural, Victorian, natural history, and items that relate to Mohawk Valley's industrial past (documentary, photographic, and tangible).

The museum offers exhibits, lectures, classes, and other recreational and educational programs.

Dedham Historical Society and Museum [MA]

Description

The Society operates a museum housing a collection of furnishings and artifacts ranging from pre-Columbian stone tools and the 1652 Metcalf great chair (the oldest dated American-made chair) to a collection of Dedham and Chelsea pottery. On exhibit are several rare and important clocks including one of the only two known "astronomical shelf clocks" by Simon Willard. Also in the collection are Civil War artifacts and a number of paintings by artists including John Constable, Gilbert Stuart, Amasa Hewins, Henry Hitchings, and Alvan Fisher. Photographic materials document life in Dedham since the 19th century, while furniture and memorabilia bring the past to life. The Society also owns the largest collection of silver by Katherine Pratt, silversmith.

Houston Railroad Museum, Gulf Coast Chapter

Description

The Museum seeks to preserve and share with the public the history of railroading, particularly Texas railroading, as it has been and as it is now. The museum, open every weekend from April to November, features a collection of railroad locomotives, cars, and other artifacts, as well as a model railroad and a research library.

Charlotte Museum of History and Hezekiah Alexander Homesite [NC]

Description

The Charlotte Museum of History and Hezekiah Alexander Homesite comprise multiple venues on an eight-acre wooded campus in east Charlotte. The oldest structure, and the reason for the museum's location, is the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, a 5,000-square-foot rock house. The Hezekiah Alexander House is the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County. Listed on the National Register for Historic Places, it was built circa 1774 and still stands on its original site. The house is accompanied by a reproduction log kitchen and reconstructed two-story springhouse. The Museum itself occupies a 36,000-square-foot building and displays three galleries' worth of displays taking the Charlotte-Mecklenburg story from the 18th to the 20th century.

The museum and site offer exhibits, guided and self-guided tours for school groups, museum-on-the-go traveling trunks, programs for homeschoolers, and other educational and recreational events (including living history events).

Phelps County Historical Society and Nebraska Prairie Museum

Description

The mission of the Nebraska Prairie Museum is to be a historical, interactive resource for the community, through the collection of artifacts, archival documents, and memorabilia that explain the lifestyles of the area's past residents. The Museum contains over one acre of indoor exhibits, including collections of period clothing, antique toys, farm equipment, tools, and household items, as well as a unique World War II German POW exhibit room.

Costa Mesa Historical Society and Museum and the Diego Sepulveda Adobe

Description

The Society seeks to promote and preserve the natural, civil, literal, and ecclesiastical history of the Harbor area in general and the City of Costa Mesa in particular. The Society's museum present exhibits tracing the area's history from prehistory to the present day. The Society also maintains the Diego Sepulveda Adobe (the Estancia), the history of which stretches back to the 1700s. Four distinct periods of California history are represented in the rooms of the Estancia—Indian, Mission, Spanish, and Victorian—and the Society has used these periods as guidelines for furnishing the Adobe.

Autry National Center [CA]

Description

The Autry National Center celebrates the American West through three important institutions: the Museum of the American West, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and the Institute for the Study of the American West. The Autry was established in 2003 following the merger of the Southwest Museum, the Women of the West Museum , and the Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage). Through innovative exhibitions, a broad range of programs, and an extensive collection of art and artifacts, the Autry National Center explores the distinct stories and interactions of cultures and peoples, and their impact on the complex, evolving history of the American West.

The museums provide exhibits, tours, performances, film screenings, and other educational and recreational programs.

Sherman County Historical Museum (OR)

Description

The Museum’s national-award-winning exhibits comprise 14,280 square feet and over 10,000 artifacts – tools and equipment - telling the stories of the Columbia Plateau Tenino and Wasco people, Oregon Trail travelers, rural dry-land wheat farmers and their families, military service, schools and toys – from horse-power to electricity and engine-power. Interpretation and hands-on activities for students are suitable for grades K-12. Interpretive materials include A Guide to the Oregon Trails in Sherman County, A Tourist’s Guide to Grain Production, and a twice-yearly historical anthology, Sherman County: For the Record with local stories by local authors. Amenities include clean restrooms, The Museum Store, and rotating exhibits featuring local artists. Open daily May through October 10-5 – otherwise by appointment - next to Moro City Park and History Wall.
