A new interactive online exhibit from the California Council for the Humanities (CCH)—"We Are California"—will explore the history and stories of those who have immigrated or migrated to California. A new partnership between the Council and the California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP) will help to bring this exciting resource to the classroom. The topic of these workshops will be "The Era of Great Internal Migrations to California" between World War I and World War II. It will discuss, contrast, and analyze the experiences of Dust Bowl migrants to California, Mexicans, and Mexican Americans.

Top-notch teachers will demonstrate how to teach local California community history—including geography of the local region, the culture of the Gabrielino Indians, the daily life and economic legacy of the local ranchos, the development of the harbor, local government, and the community. Participants will each receive instructional materials kit with model lessons, maps, primary source materials, and literature books.

This Geography Awareness Week workshop will begin with a lecture on migration to the U.S. from Latin America. Lessons from the Geography Action! packet will then be introduced. The session will conclude with guided tours of four Latin-American art exhibits at the Fowler Museum.

Using ESSEX History examines local history at its best in this seminar lookubg at Salem and the China Trade with Salem State's Dr. Dane Morrison. Dr. Morrison will lead attendees through a discussion of the economic and maritime history of Salem during the China Trade and the ways in which this vast trading network affected the economy and culture of Essex County. This seminar will take place at the House of the Seven Gables—a stone's throw from historic Derby Wharf, the center of the China Trade. In the afternoon, teachers will be introduced to some of the Peabody Essex Museum's vast collections of China Trade artifacts.

This learning opportunity will focus on Marzano's research on the nine instructional strategies that have demonstrated increases in student achievement and will be an opportunity to add new instructional "tools" to educators' teaching "toolboxes." Additional topics will include the use and communication of essential learning targets to students, assessment for learning, determining and describing proficiency, goal setting, and success criteria for learning in the classroom, and other topics as determined by the needs of the group.
