Powerful and Authentic Social Studies (PASS) is a professional development program that trains social studies teachers in curriculum design, assessment, and instruction in a standards-based environment. This institute will provide participants with the materials and expertise necessary to lead their own PASS training workshops in their schools and school districts.

"Four hundred years ago, in 1609, Henry Hudson made his first voyage on the river that came to bear his name. To mark this historic event, Pace University commissioned Joseph Bruchac, a writer and educator of Abenaki descent, to create a play based on crew member Robert Juet's journal of the famous expedition. The play tells of the coming together of the European and Indian culture, in all of its complexities, and of the Indians' efforts to preserve and protect the river and their way of life.
Educators are invited to see a special presentation of the original play by noted author Joseph Bruchac (Abenaki) entitled The River of Tides. There will be a Q & A with Mr. Bruchac following the performance. Educators who pre-register will receive a companion curriculum."

Take back to your classroom a wealth of resources, including the latest historical research by well-known scholars. This four-day program in Raleigh and Historic Halifax will feature speakers, discussions, activities, and field trips.
The Eastern Regional Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Program is currently accepting proposals for the integration of primary sources in K-12 education, existing pre-service and graduate-level education curriculum, and teacher professional development programs. Additionally, cultural institutions and other community organizations may be partners within these programs.
Proposals from $5,000 to $15,000 will be considered and are accepted on a rolling basis. Preference will be given to proposals that have the most potential for being integrated into K-12 classrooms for the long-term.
Primarily Teaching is designed to provide access to the rich resources of the National Archives for educators at the upper elementary, secondary, and college levels. Participants will learn how to research the historical records, create classroom materials based on the records, and present documents in ways that sharpen students’ skills and enthusiasm for history, government, and the other humanities. Each participant will search the holdings of the National Archives for documents suitable for classroom use and develop strategies for using these documents in the classroom or design professional development activities to help classroom teachers use primary source documents effectively.

This workshop provides a varied program of lectures, demonstrations, analysis of documents, independent research, and group work that introduces teachers to the holdings and organization of the National Archives. Participants will learn how to do research in historical records, create classroom material from records, and present documents in ways that sharpen students' skills and enthusiasm for history, social studies, and the humanities. Each participant selects and prepares to research a specific topic, searches the topic in the records of the National Archives, and develops a teaching unit that can be presented in his or her own classroom.
"This workshop will introduce participants to the Native American cultures of the Ohio River Valley and the personalities that scouted, surveyed and established Ohio's first Euro-American settlement. Guest speakers will include Dr. James H. O'Donnell, Professor of History at Marietta College, and curators and archivists from the Ohio Historical Society and the Marietta College Archives."
