Monroe County Historical Association [PA]

Description

The Monroe County Historical Association is dedicated to the preservation of Monroe County history. The association is headquartered in the Stroud Mansion, which is located in downtown Stroudsburg. The Stroud Mansion also serves as a historic house museum and houses the association's research library. The association also owns the Bell School, a one-room schoolhouse used for tours, and the Driebe Freight Station which now houses an art museum.

Luzerne County Historical Society [PA]

Description

The Luzerne County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The society is headquartered in the Bishop Library, which also houses the society's collections. The society also owns and operates a local history museum, which has been in continuous operation since 1893, and the Swetland Home, which serves as a historic house museum. The Swetland Home has several period rooms, which span a period of over 70 years.

Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation

Description

The Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation is located within Pennsylvania's 2,606-acre Ridley Creek State Park. The 112-acre Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation itself is a living history farm, depicting life in the region circa 1760 through 1790. Demonstrations include food preservation, open hearth cooking, fiber processing, and farming.

The park offers 12 miles of trails, gardens, and 14 picnic areas. The plantation offers costumed living history interpreters; demonstrations; educational programs which meet state history, geography, environment, and ecology standards; workshops; lecture, demonstration, and/or hands-on outreach programs; summer camps; Scout programs; and group tours. Reservations are required for group tours, and on site educational programs are available between April and mid-November only.

YMI Cultural Center [NC]

Description

The YMI Cultural Center presents African American culture and history. The center is located within the 1892 Tudor-style Young Men's Institute, constructed at the request of James Vanderbilt for the African American men who had built Vanderbilt's Biltmore House. The building held a drugstore, doctor's office, public library, funeral parlor, gym, kindergarten, and church services for the local African American population. Permanent exhibits showcase the history of the Vanderbilts and the YMI Cultural Center, as well as the drawings of artist Charles W. White, a noted Social Realist.

The center offers exhibts; a traveling exhibit of stamps depicting African Americans of historical note; and art workshops. The traveling exhibit is available to area schools. The website offers a virtual exhibit, An Unmarked Trail: Stories of African Americans in Buncombe County from 1850-1900.

Pioneer Woman Museum [OK]

Description

The Museum preserves the legacy of women from all races, creeds, and nationalities who have contributed to the development of Oklahoma. Its education center features craft demonstrations, special exhibits, an interactive timeline, and the Pioneer Woman Walk of Fame.

T.C. Steele State Historic Site [IN]

Description

The T.C. Steele State Historic Site preserves the home of American Impressionist and portraitist Theodore Clement Steele (1847-1926) and his wife Selma Neubacher Steele (1870-1945). As such, the site was once privy to visits from a wide range of U.S. artists. The grounds include the 1907 "House of the Singing Winds," two studios, a garage, guest cottages, and remote painting shacks to permit outdoor painting in a wide range of weather conditions.

The site offers guided building tours, a summer camp, educational programs which meet state standards, educational outreach programs, trails, gardens, and a nature preserve.

Quonset Air Museum [RI]

Description

The Rhode Island Quonset Air Museum (QAM) preserves, interprets, and presents Rhode Island's aviation history through collections, research, education, and exhibits. The air museum educates the public in the state's rich aviation legacy and displays collections that document the contributions of Rhode Island to the growth and development of aviation and space exploration.

Fort Griffin State Historic Site [TX]

Description

Fort Griffin State Historic Site is located on 506.2 acres with 1,500 feet of river area. The site is home to the partially restored ruins of Old Fort Griffin located on a bluff overlooking the town site of Fort Griffin and the Clear Fork of the Brazos River Valley. The fort was constructed in 1867 and deactivated in 1881. The ruins include a hand-dug well, a mess hall, barracks, a library, a rock chimney, a store, an administration building, a cistern, a hospital, a powder magazine, the foundation of the officers' quarters, the first sergeant's quarters, a restored bakery, and replicas of enlisted men's huts.

The site offers occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).

Pearl S. Buck Museum [WV]

Description

The Pearl S. Buck Museum is located in the mountains of West Virginia, and commemorates the birthplace of renowned author Pearl S. Buck, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1932. The museum is located in the home where Buck was born, and today serves as a museum of the life and times of Pearl S. Buck.
