Washington County Historical Society and Museum [MD]

Description

The Washington County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Washington County, MD. To this end, the society operates a museum within the Miller House, a late Federal townhouse dating to between 1818 and 1823, and the 1904 two-room Beaver Creek School. Exhibits in the Miller House include period rooms set to 1850s through 1870s appearances, clocks, dolls, Shenandoah Valley pottery, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the C and O Canal. The house grounds also include a library and gardens. The Beaver Creek School contains period school, workshop, parlor, and cobbler shop settings; vintage toys; costumes and uniforms; an 1840s hand crank organ; and other artifacts.

The society offers exhibits, period rooms, a garden, and research library access.

Allamuchy Mountain State Park and Waterloo Village [NJ]

Description

Waterloo Village takes the visitor through time from a 400-year old Lenape (Delaware) Indian village to a bustling port along the once prosperous Morris Canal. This early 19th-century restored village contains a working mill complex with gristmills and sawmills, a general store, blacksmith shop, and several historic houses.

The site offers exhibits, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Old State Capitol

Description

The Old State Capitol is a reconstruction of Illinois's fifth statehouse, the first to be located in Springfield. The building served as the seat of state government and a center of Illinois political life from 1839 to 1876. The first floor is composed of a central hall flanked by rooms interpreting government offices, two libraries, and the supreme courtroom. A complex of first-floor rooms also provides an audiovisual theater and staff offices. Recreated second-floor spaces include a rotunda, legislative chambers, and smaller offices and meeting rooms. The building is located in the center of a large landscaped yard surrounded by a replica of the original 1850s ornamental iron fence.

The site offers tours, a short film, and occasional educational and recreational events.

Old Colony Historical Society [MA]

Description

Founded in 1853, the Old Colony Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in New England. The society maintains a diverse collection of local historical artifacts, ranging form Native American artifacts to portraits of Taunton elders, and is housed in the Bristol Academy building, a fine example of Italianate architecture that was designed by Richard Upjohn and is now listed on the national register of historic places.

Catawba County Historical Association [NC]

Description

The Catawba County Historical Association is dedicated to preserving the history of Hickory, North Carolina, and the surrounding area. The association owns and operates two historic house museums, the historic Murray's Mill, and a museum of local history which is housed in the grand 1924 courthouse.

Miamisburg Historical Society [OH]

Description

The Miamisburg Historical Society is dedicated preserving the historical heritage of Miamisburg, Ohio, and the surrounding area. The society owns and operates three local historic structures, the Daniel Gebhart Tavern Museum, which serves as a local history museum, the Market Square Building, which serves as the society headquarters and as the location for the society's research room, and Jacob Kercher Pioneer Home, which is open as a historic house museum.

The Meux House Museum is focused on preserving the beautiful Meux home, a premier architectural treasure of Fresno. The home was built in 1889 by Dr. Thomas Meux, formerly of Tennessee. The Meux family occupied the home until 1970, and now is open as a historic house museum.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park [FL]

Description

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973, Florida's southernmost state park is popular for recreation, as well as U.S. military history. The fort was one of a series built in the mid-1800s to defend the nation's southeastern coastline. Completed in 1866, Fort Zachary Taylor played important roles in the Civil War and Spanish-American War.

The park offers tours, exhibits, and occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).

Haggin Museum [CA]

Description

The Haggin Museum displays paintings by major artists and presents the history of the San Joaquin Valley, California. Artworks within the collection are both European and American in origin, and date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Artists include Jean Béraud, Rosa Bonheur, William Bouguereau, Jean-Léon Gérôme, George Inness, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Albert Bierstadt.

The museum offers exhibits and summer art workshops.

Robert Frost Farm State Historic Site [NH]

Description

The Robert Frost Farm was home to Robert Frost and his family from 1900–1911. Frost, one of the nation's most acclaimed poets whose writings are said to be the epitome of New England, attributed many of his poems to memories from the Derry years. The simple two-story white clapboard farmhouse is typical of New England in the 1880s.
