Professor Jeremi Suri looks at the foreign policy of Theodore Roosevelt and its balancing of both American republicanism and the classical European balance of power as the U.S. rose to become a world power.

The Slater Memorial Museum [CT]

Description

The Slater Memorial Museum presents world culture through a collection of fine and decorative arts. Collections include 18th through 19th century American art and decorative arts; African and Oceanic sculpture; casts of Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Renaissance sculptures; Native American artifacts; Tokugawa Period Japanese art; Chinese and Korean art; local maritime artifacts; and European decorative and fine arts from between 1600 and 1800. The museum is located within a circa 1886 Romanesque Revival structure.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, and weekly art classes for children. Four to six weeks advance notice is required for guided tours.

Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture [WA]

Description

The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture presents exhibits and information of cultural, historical, and/or artistic note. Collections include more than 68,000 artifacts from Europe, Asia, and both North and South America. Artifacts are of regional historical interest, works of art, and/or related to Native American populations. In addition to these exhibits, the museum operates the Campbell House which interprets daily life circa 1900.

The museum offers exhibits, period rooms, an activity area, activities to be completed throughout the museum, summer camps, thematic tours, traveling trunks, educator's workshops, public lectures, and a small restaurant. Wheelchairs are available. Advance registration of group visitation is appreciated, and appointments are necessary for research library and/or archival access. The website offers teacher resources and podcasts.

Due to financial necessity, the Campbell House is no longer open to the public. School groups may still schedule tours of the building.

Adrian Basora on Democratic Transitions

Description

Adrian Basora, Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and Director of the Project on Democratic Transitions, offers an in-depth assessment of the political, economic, and social transitions of Central and East European countries 15 years after the fall of communism; and discusses the development of non-democratic countries following 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He examines responses to democracy and looks at attempts to spread democracy.

Crossroads of Empire: Cultural Contact and Imperial Rivalry at Old Fort Niagara

The workshop investigates the interaction between Europeans and Native Americans in the struggle to control North America, both during the colonial era and the early years of American independence. Participants will study early French contact with the Iroquois Great League of Peace, warfare between France and Great Britain and the Iroquois caught in the middle, Patriot struggles against Loyalists and Indians during the American Revolution, and key battles fought at the Fort during the War of 1812, which resulted in the eventual dispossession of the Iroquois after that conflict.
