This three-day seminar for 8th-grade Chicago Public Schools Language Arts and Social Studies teachers will explore ways to teach the Holocaust through the lens of literature. It will explore literature through fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and diaries. (Priority will be given to schools involved in the Choices in Little Rock initiative.)

Using Facing History's principal resource book, Holocaust and Human Behavior, as well as video, primary sources, and presentations by survivors and leading scholars of the Holocaust, participants will experience a rigorous encounter with this powerful history. During the Seminar, a wide range of innovative teaching strategies are used to help teachers confront the Holocaust. At the conclusion of the Seminar, participants leave with a thorough grounding on how to incorporate these teaching tools into their classrooms in ways that will help students connect the history of the Holocaust to the ethical choices they face today. Participants at this Seminar follow Facing History's scope and sequence. The Seminar begins with an exploration of questions of identity in life today and then moves to questions of group membership in history. These early sessions lay the foundation for an intensive examination of the steps that led to the Holocaust and the eventual mass murder of millions of Jews and other victims. The Seminar then ask participants to think about questions of judgment and memory, considering who bears responsibility for crimes against humanity and how to confront or memorialize the past. The Seminar concludes by challenging participants to reflect on questions about what it means to participate responsibly in a civil society. Following this Seminar, participants receive complete access to Facing History's Educator Resources, including downloadable unit plans, lessons, and online conversations. In addition, participants are invited to borrow videos, dvds, and books from Facing History's lending library. Finally, each participant is assigned a Facing History Program Associate, who is available to provide ongoing support services. Seminars provide educators with an interactive exploration of Facing History's content and teaching strategies. Each seminar introduces teachers to leading scholars and offers experiences that can deepen and enrich their students' encounters with the past.

Educators in a Jewish Setting: Holocaust and Human Behavior Online Seminar

Description

Teaching the Holocaust in the Context of Jewish History, Ethics, and Identity is a course that offers participants the opportunity to explore the connection between Jewish history and identity and the moral questions inherent in everyday life. Daily sessions will explore the Holocaust as a lesson not only in racism and antisemitism but also in courage, caring and compassion. Participants will learn multidisciplinary pedagogical approaches for teaching a course on the Holocaust that is grounded in a study of Jewish ethics and values. In our seminars Facing History examines the Holocaust in a variety of disciplines including history, literature, and the arts. FH also integrates traditional and modern Jewish texts into its signature scope and sequence. World War II

Description

"World War II was the most destructive conflict in the history of the world, affecting nearly everyone who was alive at the time, as well as the generations that followed. This seminar will examine the causes, course, and consequences of the war, both in the European and Asian/Pacific theaters, as well as on the American homefront. While it will emphasize the role that the United States played in the conflict, it will not ignore those aspects of the war in which Americans were not directly involved, such as the early war years (1939-41), and the genocidal conflict between Germany and the Soviet Union."

Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators

Description

At this conference, special emphasis will be placed on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's new exhibit, "State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda." Museum educators and scholars share rationales, strategies, and approaches for presenting this complex topic to students, in sessions designed specifically for middle- and high-school teachers. Participants have extensive time to view the Museum's permanent exhibition "The Holocaust"; tour "Remember the Children: Daniel's Story," and other special exhibitions; and visit the interactive computers in the Wexner Learning Center and other resource areas. Seminar sessions emphasize planning and implementing units of study for teaching about the Holocaust in middle and high schools. Educators who complete the program receive a set of educational materials and a voucher worth $100 to purchase Holocaust–related resources in the Museum Shop.
