Everyone who ever passed through this part of Kentucky or called it home left a story behind. Explorers. Movie stars. Artists. Pioneers. Slaves. The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center brings all the stories of the Maysville region into focus by offering dynamic collections, exhibits, and a genealogical-historical library.

The Genealogical & Historical Research Library sheds light on the people and events through an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, documents and newspapers from colonial times. The Regional History Museum illuminates the past through award-winning dioramas, more than 4,000 regional artifacts and a gallery of fine art related to Maysville and Kentucky. And the Kathleen Savage Browning Miniatures Collection looks at the world from a new perspective through mesmerizing, 1/12-scale reproductions of homes, furnishings, clothing, artwork and people. Teachers are shown how to use this collection as a teaching tool.

Every fall is an exhibit just for students. Tours are tailored to learning objectives. Students can tour as a group for $1.50 each; teachers free with Teacher's Guide provided.

"The Clermont County Historical Society (CCHS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1958. It exists to preserve and interpret Clermont County, Ohio's history. CCHS has the unique role of being the keeper of the County's memories and heritage."

The Society operates the Prairie Trails Museum. The large main brick building of the Museum houses 25,000 artifacts in five galleries covering over 21,000 square feet and the range of the area's history. The red Heritage Barn contains an extensive collection of early farm artifacts displayed in interpretive exhibits.

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park nestles in a little valley 2,400 feet above sea level with open meadows and large valley oaks that once provided the native Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns. The park was created in 1968 and preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with some 1,185 mortar holes—the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America. The Museum has been designed to reflect the architecture of the traditional roundhouse. Exhibited in this two-story museum are outstanding examples of the technology and crafts of the Miwok and other Sierra Nevada native American groups.

The Artillery Company of Newport operates a military museum in its Armory. The Museum houses one of the country's most extensive collections of military uniforms and memorabilia, including uniforms worn by His Royal Highness Prince Phillip; Lord Louis Mountbatten; Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery of Alamein; President Anwar Sadat of Egypt; Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz; Generals of the Army Dwight Eisenhower and Mark Clark; Generals William Westmoreland, Creighton Abrams, and Alexander Haig; and Secretary of State Colin Powell, as well as other American commanders. The Museum collection also includes four bronze cannon cast by Paul Revere in 1798 for the State of Rhode Island, three Civil War artillery pieces, a letter written to the men of the Artillery Company in 1794 by George Washington, and a Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington, as well as numerous artifacts of particular significance to the history of the State of Rhode Island and the Artillery Company of Newport.

The Society is headquartered in a building designed by noted Georgia architect Neel Reid. Erected in 1921, it was originally the Hawkes Children's Library. In 1980 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the first structure in Polk County to receive this honor. The Society also operates a museum in the building. Of special interest is the Palladian window, a Neel Reid hallmark. Each year the collection of photographs, newspapers, documents, and artifacts on display has grown.

The museum complex includes the Kitchin House, the Male Academy/Parsonage, Woodsdale General Store, Dr. John H. Merritt's office, a tobacco barn, and the Van Hook Subscription School, which is believed to be the oldest in the state. Variety is the emphasis of the museum with something for everyone from sports fans to doll lovers. The Enos Slaughter display honoring the Roxboro native and Hall of Famer features a replica of a statue depicting his winning slide in the 1946 World Series while the Victorian Wedding Room showcases a wedding party of dolls in full wedding garb. Other exhibits focus on Black history; Native Americans; the Titanic; and the military, with uniforms from all branches of the service in all the wars from the American Revolution to Vietnam. Displays are updated often and special commemorative events including historical reenactments are held throughout the year.

The Society operates out of the 1863 building called the "Franklin House of History," which houses period rooms, collections storage, a research library, and museum offices.

The National Portrait Gallery is a fascinating museum that showcases portraits of America's most famous and influential figures. Using a variety of mediums and styles, famous artists have created likenesses of presidents, artists, writers, politicians, etc. and historians place their importance in context.

Students visiting the museum can take a docent-led interactive tour of the museum based on educational standards (60-90 min.). Interactive educational programs are offered for grades K-12 on a variety of topics. Teacher resources can be downloaded from the website. Teacher workshops are also available year-round.
