Native American leaders and anthropologists explore the history of the Boston Harbor Islands' Deer Island, used as an internment camp for Native Americans during King Phillip's War in 1675.

Professor Jill Lepore describes the war between colonists and Native Americans that broke out in New England in 1675. She emphasizes the impact of cultural memory of events in constructing national identity.

Historian Anthony Sammarcora follows the history of molasses in the 18th-century United States, looking at its importance to the world economy, its connection with the slave trade, and the Boston molasses flood.

John Quincy, Jr., 11th-generation descendent of the New England Quincy family, traces the history of the family, a dominant force in area politics (the Boston mayorage passed from Quincy father to son for several generations).

A panel of historians and political analysts discuss the experiences and history of Irish and Jewish immigrants and their descendants in Boston. The panelists look at the current population of these ethnic groups in Boston, as well.

Author Lisa Alther talks about her work to trace her family genealogy and determine whether her ancestry includes any members of a perhaps-folkloric group of Tennessee residents called the "Melungeons." She talks about how people reconstruct their family trees, adding and omitting to create the history they wish to remember.

Joseph Garver, reference librarian of the Harvard Map Collection, displays maps of coastal Massachusetts from the 1600s to the 1930s and shows how cartographers have drawn the shoreline to suit their political and commercial goals. His presentation includes slides.

Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collections chief Mark Dimunation discusses a recently-completed project to reconstruct Thomas Jefferson's library—the library sold to the U.S. government to form the foundation of the Library of Congress. He deals with the history of the original collection, and what the collection reveals about Thomas Jefferson. The presentation includes slides.
