Description

Description

The Samuel Cupples House is located on the campus of Saint Louis University. The house was purchased in the mid 1900s by Saint Louis University in order to serve as an administrative center for the university. Now, the house serves as a historic house museum, and offers tours to the public throughout the year.

Blackwells Mills Canal House [NJ]

Description

The Blackwells Mills Canal House was built circa 1835 as a home for the men and women who operated the swinging bridges over the canal. In the 1970s, the last owner of the home died and the canal was declared a National Historic Site. Now, the house is a historic house museum, and visitors to the home can view how bridge operators lived in the 1800s as well as view artifacts and historical information about the Blackwells Mills Canal.

Knott House Museum [FL]

Description

The Knott House Museum was first built in the early 1800s, and opened as a museum in 1992. Today, visitors to the museum will take a step back in time as they enter the house, as the house is furnished in its original, Victorian-era furniture. Upstairs, visitors are treated to two exhibits on the history of Tallahassee and the Knott family's special role in that history.

California Foundry History Museum [CA]

Description

"Established in 1997, the California Foundry History Institute (CFHI) is a non-profit educational organization incorporated in the state of California and dedicated to the collection and preservation of historical records pertaining to the history of the foundry industry in California." The institute owns and operates two museums in the greater Sacramento area. Both museums offer impressive collections pertaining to California history and the history of the California foundry industry.

Fort Adams [RI]

Across Newport Harbor stands the largest coastal fortification in the United States. From 1824 to 1950, Fort Adams housed generations of our soldiers, today it still stands ready for exploration.

Description

The Katahdin Iron Works is located in rural Maine and was the state's only iron works installation. The iron works operated between 1843 and 1890, and today stands as a monument to the industrial age in Maine. Visitors can view the carefully preserved iron furnaces and buildings, which were restored in 1966. In addition to the Iron Works, the state historic site also offers many options for outdoor activity, including hiking and camping.

Chapman Historical Museum [NY]

Description

The Chapman Historical Museum is "located near downtown Glens Falls, a small city at the southeastern edge of the Adirondack Mountains, an hour north of Albany, New York. Today the museum consists of the restored Victorian home of the DeLong family, a changing exhibition gallery, research archive and gift shop." The museum also provides a wealth of educational programs tailored for children of different ages and is working on a Glens Falls historical site.

Southern Oregon Historical Society and Museums [OR]

Description

The Southern Oregon Historical Society was formed 63 years ago with the mission "to make history come alive by collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories and artifacts of our common heritage." Currently, the society owns seven unique historical properties including two museums, a historic house from the 1890s, Oregon's first bank, a small Catholic rectory, one of Jacksonville's first hotels, and a farm. The museums and the society's research library hold the society's extensive collection of almost a million stories and artifacts.
