Description

<p>SPICE is non-profit and develops multidisciplinary curriculum materials on international themes for elementary, middle school, and secondary students.</p>

<p>SPICE units include thorough lesson plans with subject overviews, primary source materials, handouts, worksheets, in-class activities, projects, and assignments. Many units are interdisciplinary.</p>

<p>While SPICE curricular materials focus primarily on international issues, a number of curricular units are appropriate for an American history course. Selected titles include: Diamonds in the Rough: Baseball and Japanese-American Internment; Security, Civil Liberties, and Terrorism; Comparative Health Care: The United States and Japan; Introduction to Diasporas in the United States; San Francisco Peace Treaty: The Cold War and the Peace Process; and, U.S.-Mexico Economic Interdependence: Perspectives from Both Sides of the Border. </p>

<p>Only the tables of contents for units are available online, though titles may be ordered through the SPICE website.</p>

Bible Point State Historic Site [ME]

Description

This 27-acre property was made famous by Teddy Roosevelt, who visited the area beginning in 1878. As a young man under the guidance of his lifelong friend and guide Bill Sewall, Roosevelt camped at the southern end of Mattawamkeag Lake and hunted and fished throughout the area. It was reported that, each day, Roosevelt would take his bible and hike to a beautiful point of land at the confluence of the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River and First Brook where he would read the bible. A plaque at the site commemorates Roosevelt's love for the area.

Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park [MT]

Description

The old Anaconda Copper Company smelter stack, completed in 1919, is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world at 585 feet. The inside diameter is 75 feet at bottom, tapering to 60 feet at the top. In comparison, the Washington Monument is 555 feet tall. The stack dominates the landscape like the Company once dominated the area's economic life. Since the smelter closed in 1980, the stack has become a symbol of the challenges that face communities dependent on finite resources.

Shawneetown Bank

Description

A fine example of Greek Revival architecture, the Shawneetown Bank was constructed 1839–1841 to house the offices of the Bank of Illinois at Shawneetown.
