The Vandalia State House, the fourth Illinois statehouse, served as the capitol from 1836 until 1839 and is the oldest surviving capitol building in the state. The first floor contains a large entry hall and rooms representing the offices of the Auditor, Treasurer, and Secretary of State, as well as the Supreme Court chamber. The second floor is composed of a central hall and recreated House and Senate chambers, each of which contains a visitor gallery reached by staircases.

The site offers an exhibit, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events.

The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum presents information on the history of the Lake Erie Islands area in Ohio. The museum includes a boat building and information on Oliver H. Perry (1785–1819), victor of the War of 1812's Battle of Lake Erie; Jordan Freeman, one of Perry's crewmen; the Native Americans of the area; and everyday life circa 1900. Collections include an extensive variety of model ships and one of two remaining Francis Metallic Lifeboats in the United States.

The museum offers a 15–minute introductory film, exhibits, children's programs, tours, lectures, seasonal events, a research library, and archives. Reservations are required for school groups.

The Apple River Fort was the site of an important battle during the Black Hawk War. It was the only fort attacked by Black Hawk during the turbulent summer of 1832. On June 24, 1832, the settlers at the fort turned back an attack by some 200 Sauk and Fox warriors led by Black Hawk. The war, which lasted only 16 weeks, ended the threat of Indian attacks in the area and opened the region to further settlement. Many notable men participated in the Black Hawk War including a young Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and General Winfield Scott. Abraham Lincoln and his militia company arrived at the fort the day after the battle. Today, the fort has been reconstructed and is open for self-guided tours. Special events throughout the year highlight many aspects of life in Jo Daviess County in 1832. Exhibits at the Interpretive Center, on the trail, and at the fort tell the story of the Sauk and Fox, the early settlers, and the conflict that became known as the Black Hawk War.

Rosedale, originally part of a 911 acre plantation, was built in 1815 by Archibald Frew, merchant, postmaster and tax collector. In the 1830s, a doctor occupied the residence. He oversaw both his practice and the plantation work, carried out by two slave families. Rosedale exemplifies Federal period architecture (1780–1830) and is noted for its faux grain woodwork and the original French wallpaper that survives in three rooms. On a broader scope, the plantation is motivated by the preservation, exhibition, interpretation, and preservation of the architecture, decorative arts, and lifestyle of the 19th–century Catawba River Valley region.

The plantation offers guided tours (both in modern and period dress), hands-on activities, role playing, and educational activities (with listed corresponding state
standards) specifically for field trips.

The Smithfield Community Association manages the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark, lifelong residence of abolitionist and social reformer Gerrit Smith (1797–1874), and preserves this history of Petersboro, New York, a major Underground Railroad destination and site of the inaugural meeting of the NYS Anti-Slavery Society in 1835.

The Montpelier Foundation's primary mission is to present the lasting legacy of James Madison (1751–1836) as Father of the U.S. Constitution, architect of the Bill of Rights, and fourth president of the United States. The Montpelier estate, home of Madison for the majority of his life, features the Madison mansion, historic buildings, gardens, forests, a freedman's cabin and farm, and the site of a Civil War encampment.

The Montpelier Foundation offers exhibits, an archaeological lab and sites, hands-on activities, an introductory film, guided tours of the Madison mansion, self-guided landscape tours, a variety of other thematic guided tours, limited transportation grants, and educational programming with suggested grade levels (including in-class outreach presentations).

The Boalsburg Heritage Museum seeks to preserve and share the history of the Boalsburg and Harris Townships, Pennsylvania. The Sarah Sweet House, which holds the museum, was built in 1825 in a typical Pennsylvania Dutch architectural style. The interior houses a variety of period decorative arts original to the area, as well as relevant exhibits.

The 108-acre Washington Monument State Park contains the first monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington. The stone tower's construction began July 4, 1827; and involved roughly 500 inhabitants of Boonsboro, Maryland. The visitor center presents information on the natural and human history of the area, and the park regularly sponsors Civil War living history events.

At the Tipton-Haynes historic site, 11 buildings tell a story of Tennessee's history from early settlement to the Civil War era. Contained within the large white house is the log cabin of Colonel John Tipton. In the 1850s, Haynes changed the front porch to what is seen today and constructed his law office next to the house. The outbuildings include a smokehouse, pigsty, loom house, still house, springhouse, and the large log barn and corncrib from the Tipton period. In addition, there is the home of George Haynes, a slave with the Haynes family. Colonel John Tipton is buried in the site's cemetery.

The site offers exhibits, educational programs, research library access, and occasional recreational and historical events.

The Milford Historical Society seeks to spread knowledge of the history of Milford, Michigan and the community thereof. To this end, they have established a museum and a research and archives room. The museum is housed in an 1853 Greek revival home, originally erected by a local cabinet maker. The building has previously been a home to local merchants and the offices for Milford Village, Milford Township, and the local police department. The upper floor is furnished in a late Victorian style, and contains locally made furniture. In contrast, the lower floor recreates 1830s cabin life.
