The Real Treason of Aaron Burr

"In 1807, Aaron Burr was tried and acquitted on charges of treason for his 'adventures' in the American West, but he had fallen out of favor in American life long before, after he had run for president against Thomas Jefferson, served a single term as vice president, and shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in an 1804 duel. A free spender, a womanizer, and the only Founding Father who was actually descended from the English aristocracy, Burr was famously secretive and conspiratorial, leaving little archival record of his dealings. In this lecture, historian Gordon Wood argues that Burr's true treason was not his actions in the West but his naked ambition, his lack of principals and character that made him a threat to the young republic."

Redeeming Martin Van Buren

Description

Professor Eric Foner argues that the idea of sending African American slaves to colonize Africa (an idea which Abraham Lincoln at times embraced) was part of the larger idea of emancipation for American slaves, but it did not allow its supporters to consider how freed slaves might become part of American society. It was Lincoln's consideration of this very issue, Foner says, that distinguishes him from other advocates of emancipation.

Lincoln's youth was beset by poverty and loss—his mother died when he was only 10, and his father suffered from bouts of melancholy. Clinton argues that these ordeals helped Lincoln to deal with later obstacles and tragedies.

The 1803 Swetland Homestead contains rooms furnished in period styles ranging from those of the early 1800s to the 1860s. The wide range of stylistic interpretation showcases the changes in domestic life and Wyoming, PA's industrialization, which occurred during this window of time.

The site offers period rooms. Tours are available to groups, including school groups, with advance notice.

Beehive House [UT]

Description

The Beehive House, built 1854, was the home of Brigham Young (1801-1877) during his years as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as the Governor of the Utah Territory. The interior is furnished in period style. The name of the residence comes from the beehive which sits at the top of the home as a symbolic reminder of the importance of an industrious nature.

The house offers free 30-minute tours.

Pawnee Indian Museum State Historic Site [KS]

Description

The Pawnee Nation was the dominant power of the Central Plains for hundreds of years. This museum tells the story of an 1820s Pawnee village. The most remarkable feature is the museum’s centerpiece—the excavated floor of a large 1820s Pawnee earth lodge. Visitors can walk the perimeter of the lodge and view the rare sacred bundle that hangs above the altar. After touring the museum, they can walk the interpretive trail that winds through the depressions marking other lodges.

Examining a historical Supreme Court case is a great opportunity to teach students about the past as well as about the precedents that shape the American legal landscape.

In this lesson, students examine the 1807 trial of Aaron Burr in which the former Vice President was indicted for treason. After examining Chief Justice John Marshall’s decision, students are asked to apply his interpretation of the Constitution to the more recent case of John Walker Lindh, American Taleb.

The lesson centers on three primary documents: Article III, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, an excerpt from Burr’s indictment, and an excerpt from Marshall’s ruling. These documents allow students to explore the legal definition of treason, the claims made against Burr, and Marshall’s reasons for finding Burr innocent. Examination of Lindh's case teaches students to apply Constitutional definitions and past interpretations thereof, in the form of legal precedent, to recent events.

While the primary documents are a bit challenging, they are accompanied by specific questions that help students identify key points in the texts. Teacher answer keys with multiple possible answers are included with all activities.
