Marble Valley Historical Society and Museums [GA]

Description

The Marble Valley Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Pickens County, Georgia. To this end, the society operates two historical structures, the Old Pickens County Jail and the Kirby-Quinton Mountain Heritage Cabin. The jail, used between 1906 and 1982, now holds exhibits on county history and law enforcement. The cabin was built in 1975 using logs from an older structure. The interior is styled in antique furnishings and decorative arts.

The society offers exhibits, period rooms, and tours. Tours of the jail and cabin are available by appointment.

Hood River County Historical Museum [OR]

Description

Hood River County Historical Museum presents the socio-cultural history of Hood River County, Oregon. Topics addressed within permanent exhibits include the daily lives of pioneer, Native American, and area ethnic groups, as well as Japanese Internment after Pearl Harbor.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, self-guided tours, activity tours, research assistance, a traveling trunk on the local fruit industry, and several school tour options. All guided tours are customized to group needs. Payment is required for research assistance.

Nethercutt Collection and Museum [CA]

Description

The Nethercutt Collection consists of more than 200 vintage automobiles, as well as mechanical musical instruments, hood ornaments, antique furniture, and musical pocket watches. Automobile makers represented include McFarlan, De Dion Bouton, Maybach, Deusenberg, and Rolls-Royce. At any given time, 30 automobiles are on display.

The collection offers 2-hour guided tours. Reservations are required. Jeans, shorts, and children under 12 are not permitted.

Hurley Heritage Society [NY]

Description

The Hurley Heritage Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Hurley, New York. To this end, the society operates a museum of local history, located within the 1790 Col. Jonathan Elmendorf House. Main Street is a Historic Landmark District, containing six of Hurley's stone houses built between the late 1600s and 1818; and is used during guided tours to discuss local Dutch heritage.

The society offers exhibits, monthly guided walking tours of Main Street, guided group tours of individual stone houses, and a self-guided driving tour of the area. Reservations are required for stone house tours.

Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society and Museum [MO]

Description

The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the historical heritage of Callaway County, which is located in central Missouri. The society maintains a small museum of local history in the society headquarters, which is located in downtown Fulton, MO.

The society offers exhibits, guided tours of the museum, research resources, and walking tours of Callaway communities. The website offers visitor information, a history of the Kingdom of Callaway, and histories of all major Callaway communities.

Museum of Work and Culture [RI]

Georgetown Historical Society and Nutter D. Marvel Museum [DE]

Description

The Georgetown Historical Society operates the Nutter D. Marvel museum of local history. Housed within two barns, a one-room schoolhouse, historic church, two railroad freight buildings, and a blacksmith shop, the museum presents a collection of carriages. Additional items in the collection include photographs; books; Georgetown, DE memorabilia; and newspaper clippings.

Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge [OR]

Description

The Cape Meares Lighthouse & Wildlife Refuge is located west of Portland along the Oregon coast. The park is home to the Cape Meares Lighthouse, miles of hiking trails, an informational kiosk, the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, and the famous Octopus Tree.

Monroe County Historical Society and Museum [IN]

The Monroe County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Monroe County, IN. The society is headquartered in the Monroe County History Center, which is located in downtown Bloomington. Schoharie County Historical Society and Old Stone Fort [NY]

The Schoharie County Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of the historical heritage of Schoharie County, NY.
