Pacific Southwest Railroad Museum [CA]

"The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of railroads as they existed in the Pacific Southwest." Chapman Historical Museum [NY]

Description

The Chapman Historical Museum is "located near downtown Glens Falls, a small city at the southeastern edge of the Adirondack Mountains, an hour north of Albany, New York. Today the museum consists of the restored Victorian home of the DeLong family, a changing exhibition gallery, research archive and gift shop." The museum also provides a wealth of educational programs tailored for children of different ages and is working on a Glens Falls historical site.

Adirondack Architectural Heritage [NY]

Description

"Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) is the nonprofit historic preservation organization for New York State's Adirondack Park. AARCH was formed in 1990 with a mission to promote better public understanding, appreciation and stewardship of the Adirondack's unique and diverse architectural heritage." AARCH focuses not only on the most famous architectural pieces in the region, such as the "Great Camps," but also on historic structures that cover the general history of people in the Adirondack Region.

The organization offers area guided tours, workshops, slide presentations, and outreach programs for students. Park City Historical Society and Museum [UT]

Description

The Park City Historic Society & Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of Park City, UT. Today, Park City is most widely known for its unparalleled winter sports attractions; but Park City also has a deep and intriguing history, represented in exhibits, from early silver mining and western-bound stagecoaches to hosting a territorial jail.

Tampa Bay History Center [FL]

Description

The Tampa Bay History Center is located in the center of historic Tampa, FL, in a beautiful new building which contains 60,000 square feet of exhibits space. The building hosts numerous exhibits which depict almost 500 years of recorded history and 12,000 years of human habitation in this region of Florida. The center also hosts a research center which contains 9,638 books, manuscripts, microfilm, legal documents. In addition, the research center hosts over 1,000 genealogical resources.

Hanover Junction Train Station [PA]

Description

The Hanover Junction Train Station is located in the heart of the Heritage Rail Trail County Park. The park follows a historic railroad track and is open to the public during daylight hours throughout the year. Now, the Train Station houses a new museum located on the first floor. The museum holds artifacts chronicling local history and the history of the railroad.

Montgomery Preservation [MD]

Description

"Montgomery Preservation [...], Montgomery County's only county-wide, private, nonprofit historic preservation organization, was originally composed of a small group of local residents who formed the Montgomery County Committee of the Maryland Historical Trust in the early 1970's to further preservation efforts in the county." Today, the organization works to preserve local history on two fronts. First, the organization runs the mid-20th-century Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station, which is open to the public once a month during the summer and fall months. Second, the organization works toward encouraging preservation among local individuals and organizations.

Franklin County Historical Association and Museums [Texas]

Description

The Society maintains two historical museums. The Majors-Parchman House Museum, a restored 1883 Victorian cottage, retains its original outbuildings and displays an extensive artwork collection. The Franklin County Historical Museum, located in Mount Vernon's Old City Hall, presents exhibits on area history with additional natural history exhibits.

Southern Oregon Historical Society and Museums [OR]

Description

The Southern Oregon Historical Society was formed 63 years ago with the mission "to make history come alive by collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories and artifacts of our common heritage." Currently, the society owns seven unique historical properties including two museums, a historic house from the 1890s, Oregon's first bank, a small Catholic rectory, one of Jacksonville's first hotels, and a farm. The museums and the society's research library hold the society's extensive collection of almost a million stories and artifacts.

Wise County Historical Society [VA]

Description

The Wise County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history and genealogy of Southwestern Virginia and the Appalachian Mountains. The society maintains an archive in the Wise County Courthouse. The archive is home to the National Melungeon Registry, which is the only organization in the nation dedicated to the genealogy of the Melungeon people, as well as the Southern Appalachian Ancestral Registry and the Appalachian Quarterly, the society's quarterly newsletter.
