National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum [OK]

Description

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is America's premier institution of Western history, art, and culture, collecting, preserving, and exhibiting a collection of Western art and artifacts.

The Museum offers educational programs suitable for grades K-6, focusing on the American Cowboy or American Indian. Students spend time in a classroom setting participating in hands-on activities with Museum artifacts then take a guided tour of art and historical galleries with special exhibits supporting the chosen theme. Programs meet select Oklahoma PASS skills for Art and Social Studies.

Guided tours are provided for grades 7-12 and can be tailored to specific themes. Traveling Trunks also are available for two week periods and focus on American Indian or American Cowboy lifestyle or Oklahoma history.

Mahoning Valley Historical Society and the Arms Family Museum of Local History [OH]

Description

The Arms Family Museum is housed in Greystone, a century-old Arts and Crafts-style residence. On the first floor, in original period rooms, visitors can experience the Arms's love of handicraft, medieval architecture and design, and the natural environment. The lower level and second floor feature exhibits that explore the history of all the people who have lived in the Mahoning Valley. Artifacts displayed and interpreted in changing galleries help the visitor understand the way of life in the Mahoning Valley for different people at different times, whether Native American, pioneer settler, Welsh coal miner, African American freeman, or Eastern European immigrant.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours for student groups, teacher resource kits for loan, curriculum guides, teacher in-services, in-class traveling suitcase outreach presentations, and research library access.

West Point Museum [NY]

Description

The West Point Museum maintains the oldest and largest diversified public collection of miltaria in the Western Hemisphere. Its collections include nearly all aspects of military history and encompass the history of West Point and the United States Military Academy, the evolution of warfare, and the development of the American Armed Forces.

The museum offers exhibits on the full arc of U.S. military history.

NOTE: The Museum is located on West Point U.S. Military Academy grounds and is not available for self-guided tour without prior orientation at the Visitors Center.

Strong National Museum of Play [NY]

Description

Strong National Museum of Play houses the National Toy Hall of Fame, the National Center for the History of Electronic Games, and the world's largest collection of toys, dolls, games, and other items that celebrate play. Visitors may explore both interactive exhibits designed for children and display exhibits preserving and presenting the history of play. History-relevant exhibits for children include One History Place and TimeLab, which explore U.S. history and pop culture history, respectively.

The museum offers exhibits and a range of educational programs, including standards-based tours for student groups and orientation programs for educators.

Silver City Museum [NM]

Description

The Silver City Museum preserves, presents, and interprets the history of southwestern New Mexico through exhibits and public programs.

The museum offers exhibits, traveling trunks for loan, in-class outreach presentations, guided tours of the museum for school groups, speakers to guide school bus tours, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Greensboro Historical Museum [NC]

Description

The 17,000-square-foot Greensboro Historical Museum preserves and presents the history of the Piedmont area. Visitors can explore exhibits recreating Greensboro life at the turn of the previous century or on topics including short-story writer O. Henry, First Lady Dolley Madison, the Greensboro Sit-ins, war, and work life. They can also tour the 1788 Isley House, the 1781 McNairy House (restored to its 1850 condition), and the First Presbyterian Cemetery.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours for school groups, traveling trunks on loan for a small fee, in-class outreach presentations for a small fee, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Historical Museum at Fort Missoula [MT]

Description

The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula collects, preserves, and interprets the history of Missoula County, Fort Missoula, and the timber products industry in western Montana for the education, recreation, and cultural enrichment of visitors and area residents.

The museum offers exhibits, educational programs and tours customized to fit educator needs, outreach presentations, traveling trunks for loan, lecture series, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Heritage Museum and Cultural Center [MI]

Description

The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center promotes historical preservation, education, and research that relates to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, and the surrounding region through the presentation of exhibits and programs to the public.

The museum offers exhibits, educational tours for students in all grade levels, lending kits, outreach in-classroom presentations, curriculum guides, and research library access.

Missouri History Museum

Description

The Missouri History Museum, operated by the Missouri Historical Society, presents and interprets the state's history to the public. Through a wide range of exhibits and programming, it highlights such events and personages as the Louis and Clark Expedition and the Louisiana Purchase, Charles Lindbergh, and local Native American populations.
