The Cowpens National Battlefield commemorates the battle of Cowpens, which was fought between American and British soldiers in 1781 on grazing grounds in northwest South Carolina. The battle is notable for its result as a resounding American victory. Today, the battlefield is open to visitors and has been preserved in much the same state as during the battle.

The battlefield offers guided tours, exhibits and presentations in the visitor center, re-enactments, and demonstrations. The website offers visitor information, a history of the battle, a calendar of events, and resources for teachers.

Visit the house where George Washington, first President of the US and commander of the Continental Army, was born and spent his early years. The house burned in 1779 although its foundation survived. The home was rebuilt in the 1930's and now contains pieces from the Colonial era.

The site offers tours for school group as well as Virginia SOL-based educational programs (grades K-7). In addition to history education programs the site also offers environmental education programs on grounds. Outreach programs can be arranged during the winter months. Curriculum materials can be downloaded free of charge for teachers to use both before and after their visit.

The 20,000-acre Cumberland Gap National Historical Park preserves the site of the original "gateway to the west" used by settlers and pioneers. Native American populations had used this gap to cross the mountains for centuries prior to the arrival of European Americans. However, Daniel Boone (1734-1820) opened the Wilderness Road through Cumberland Gap to these settlers in 1775. Sites of historical note include a historical iron furnace, the 1904 Hensley Settlement, and fortifications dating to the Civil War.

The park offers two introductory films, interactive exhibits, an educational activity area for children, Appalachian craft demonstrations, two-hour cave tours, three-and-a-half- or four-hour settlement tours, Junior Ranger activities, and picnic sites. Please note that if you are interested in the cave tour, the National Park Service requests that you do not wear clothing that you have worn to another cave. This is an effort to avoid spreading White-Nose Syndrome, a condition which has caused the death of countless bats. Even if you personally fear or dislike these creatures, please remember that they are an important part of their (and our) ecosystems.

The Bandelier National Monument site contains dwellings and petroglyphs from the Ancestral Pueblo who lived in the area between 1150 and 1550. Spanish colonists inhabited the site beginning circa 1750. The 1.2-mile main trail winds through excavated archaeological sites. Visitor Center exhibits address Ancestral Pueblo life and compare it to the life of the modern Pueblo.

The monument offers a 10-minute introductory film, exhibits, guided walks, demonstrations, summer camps, a traveling trunk, books and videos for loan to educators, educational kits for use on site by fifth grade students, Junior Ranger activities, more than 70 miles of trails, outdoor activities, and a picnic area. Demonstrations occur on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Written guides to the main trail are available in Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Braille, and large print. The 113-acre Sitka National Historical Park commemorates the 1804 Battle of Sitka, the last major clash between the Tlingit and Russians. The site offers information on Tlingit culture, the Russian legacy within the United States, the battle, and the local environment. Key sights include a visitor's center and the 1843 Russian Bishop's House, one of a handful of remaining Russian colonial structures. Collections consist of more than 154,000 artifacts.

The park offers a 12-minute introductory film, exhibits, period rooms, demonstrations, Junior Ranger activities, beach exploration packs, curriculum-based education programs, and outreach programs. During the summer, ranger-led programs are also offered. The Russian Bishop's House is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors unable to enter the home can view an audiovisual program. The website offers historic photographs, an electronic field trip, a virtual tours of the Russian Bishop's House and totem pole trail, a teacher's guide, a salmon coloring book, interactive wildlife activities, a salmon jigsaw puzzle, and Web Ranger activities.

President's Park contains the White House, home to every U.S. president except George Washington, and the surrounding area. The park visitor center is the hub of the park activities. Permanent exhibits within the visitor center address symbolism, First Families, celebrations and ceremonies, the work which takes place in the White House, and the White House's architecture and interiors. In addition to the White House, the park contains the First Division Monument, General William T. Sherman Monument, District Patentees Memorial, Boy Scout Memorial, Second Division Memorial, Butt-Millet Fountain, Haupt Fountains, Bullfinch Gatehouses, and Zero Milestone, as well as memorial statues of select Revolutionary War heroes.

The park offers a 30-minute introductory video, exhibits, a children's activity area, Junior Ranger activities, self-guided White House tours, educational programs for students, and an Underground Railroad traveling trunk. White House tour requests must be submitted through one's Member of Congress, and can be requested up to six months in advance. Please see the website for details. Tours are only permitted for groups of 10 or more.

The Touro Synagogue was dedicated in 1762, and serves an active congregation today. The congregation was founded in 1658 by Sephardim who fled the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal and were searching for a haven from religious persecution in the Caribbean. Today, the synagogue celebrates not only their story, but serves to honor all who came to this shore seeking to worship freely.

The Morristown National Historical Park preserves the site where the Continental Army wintered in 1777 and during the Hard Winter of 1779-1780. Key sights include the Washington's Headquarters Museum; the 1772 Ford Mansion, headquarters of George Washington; the Jockey Hollow Visitor Center; the historic Wick House; and the 1777 Fort Nonsense Hill. Fort Nonsense was built as a fortified site for retreat should the British force the Continental soldiers from their position. It was never used, leading to its current name.

The park offers a 20-minute introductory film, a 10-minute introductory film, exhibits, period rooms, guided tours of Ford Mansion, self-guided tours of the Wick House, self-guided tours of Fort Nonsense Hill, a fourth and fifth grade curriculum-based program, Junior Ranger activities, outdoor activities, a tour road with wayside exhibits, and research library access. Accessibility is limited at the Ford Mansion. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more wishing to tour Ford Mansion, as well as for all educational programs. An application is required for library use. The website offers a virtual tour of the Ford Mansion.

The 2,040-acre Horseshoe Bend National Military Park preserves the site of the single battle with the highest cost in Native American lives. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend occurred in 1814 when General Andrew Jackson and his men attacked the Upper Creek Red Sticks, who were outnumbered by more than three to one.

The park offers a 22-minute introductory film, exhibits, Junior Ranger activities, 20-minute musket demonstrations for students, 2-hour guided battlefield tours for students, a three-mile road for auto tours, a 2.8 mile hiking trail, and picnic areas. Reservations are required for field trip groups. The website offers historic films and suggested reading.

The Thomas Jefferson National Memorial commemorates the life and ideology of founding father Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) via a statue and surrounding structure.
