Bucks County Historical Society and Museums [PA]

Description

The Bucks County Historical Society seeks to make the presentation of historical information both engaging and relevant to everyday life. To this end, the society operates the Mercer Museum, Fonthill Museum, and Spruance Library. The Mercer Museum, housed within a 1916 structure, presents pre-Industrialization artifacts of daily life. Exhibit topics include illumination, medicine, tinsmithing, transportation, and dairy farming, among more than 60 early American trades. The Spruance Library is housed within the Mercer Museum. The 1912 Fonthill Museum is a historic home. Once home to Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930), anthropologist, antiquarian, archaeologist, and designer of renowned Moravian tile, the Byzantine, Gothic, and Medieval structure is now furnished in period style. Many of the pieces are original to the site and their locations within the home.

The society offers exhibits, period rooms, guided tours of the Fonthill Museum, curriculum-based programs, curriculum-based traveling trunks, curriculum-based outreach presentations, concerts, workshops for children and teenagers, summer camps, Act 48 workshops, research library access, collections access, and research services. Reservations are strongly advised for the Fonthill Museum. The Mercer Museum is approximately 65 percent wheelchair accessible. The Fonthill Museum is wheelchair accessible on the first floor only. Collections access is by appointment only. A fee is charged for research conducted upon request. The website offers pre- and post-visit materials and an online catalog.

Fort Ticonderoga National Historic Landmark [NY]

Description

Fort Ticonderoga is located in upstate New York, and is famous for its pivotal roles in the French and Indian War and, more importantly, the Revolutionary War. However, the fort is much more than a restored military fortress. A typical visit to the fort will include rich and varied offerings including costumed interpreters, 30-minute guided tours, a world class museum, daily musket demonstrations, and self-guided tours of the Fort.

The site offers a detailed history of the fort, an events calendar, visitor information, and information regarding major events and educational programs. The site also offers a page for educators detailing Fort Ticonderoga's participation in National History Day, which is on February 27th.

Conococheague Institute [PA]

Description

The Conococheague Institute serves as a center for developing and promoting an awareness of the natural history and cultural significance of the Conococheague region, and more broadly, the Appalachian frontier in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The Institute has a special focus on exploring the history of the clash of cultures in the backcountry and the conflicts here from the French and Indian War through the American Revolution.

The location offers visitors a variety of special events and educational programs, exhibits that illustrate the lives of early Central Pennsylvania Settlers, and provides a collection of primary and secondary books and other materials which explore the history of the region and the French and Indian War. The site offers genealogical information, an events calendar, an online gift shop, and general information about the institute.

Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park [AZ]

Description

The Yuma Quartermaster Depot was used to store and distribute supplies for all military posts in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. Currently, five of the original buildings remain on the park grounds, and four contain exhibits which show visitors the military history of the site and the history of the irrigation construction in the Yuma area in the early 20th century. The park also has a visitor's center and gift shop.

The site offers visitor information, a history of the park, a photo gallery featuring 20 photographs of the park and its exhibits, a "for kids'' section with information on kid's programs, an events calendar, and information on other area attractions.

Lac qui Parle Mission [MN]

Description

The Lac qui Parle Mission was founded in 1826 on the Minnesota River. The mission only lasted 20 years before the missionaries were forced out by Dakota opposition. Luckily, the mission has stood the test of time, and today is much the same as it was during the site's brief existence as a mission. The location is notable for creating the Dakota alphabet and for the translation of the Bible into the Dakota's language.

William S. Hart Park [CA]

Description

The William S. Hart Park is located less than an hour from Los Angeles, CA, and is a historic house museum consisting of the former home and ranch of William Hart (1864-1946), a noted silent film director. The mansion contains original furnishings, an impressive collection of Western Art, and artifacts from early Hollywood and Native American tribes. Visitors to the mansion can also enjoy the rest of the ranch grounds, which have been fully restored to their state in the early 1900s.

Park City Historical Society and Museum [UT]

Description

The Park City Historic Society & Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of Park City, UT. Today, Park City is most widely known for its unparalleled winter sports attractions; but Park City also has a deep and intriguing history, represented in exhibits, from early silver mining and western-bound stagecoaches to hosting a territorial jail.

The museum offers exhibits. The site offers an events calendar, historical features, visitor information, and in-depth information regarding current exhibits.

The museum is currently closed for restoration.

Tampa Bay History Center [FL]

Description

The Tampa Bay History Center is located in the center of historic Tampa, FL, in a beautiful new building which contains 60,000 square feet of exhibits space. The building hosts numerous exhibits which depict almost 500 years of recorded history and 12,000 years of human habitation in this region of Florida. The center also hosts a research center which contains 9,638 books, manuscripts, microfilm, legal documents. In addition, the research center hosts over 1,000 genealogical resources.

The site offers visitor information, a listing of all current, past, and present exhibits, information regarding the other historical resources owned by the center, an education section complete with lesson plans, field trip guides, and interactive online educational activities, a museum store, and an events calendar.

Wise County Historical Society [VA]

Description

The Wise County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history and genealogy of Southwestern Virginia and the Appalachian Mountains. The society maintains an archive in the Wise County Courthouse. The archive is home to the National Melungeon Registry, which is the only organization in the nation dedicated to the genealogy of the Melungeon people, as well as the Southern Appalachian Ancestral Registry and the Appalachian Quarterly, the society's quarterly newsletter.

The site offers general information about the Melungeon Registry, the Southern Appalachian Ancestral Registry, and the Appalachian Quarterly. In addition, the site offers present and past issues of the Appalachian Quarterly for download.

Fort Dobbs [NC]

Description

Named for royal governor Arthur Dobbs, the fort was built during the French and Indian War to protect settlers. In 1760, a raiding party of Cherokee Indians were repelled during the only direct attack attempted against the fort. Historians believe it was dismantled after pioneers pushed further west. Fort Dobbs is the only North Carolina state historic site associated with the French and Indian War and the only one located along the official colonial frontier.

The site offers tours, demonstrations, educational programs, and recreational and educational events (including living history events).
