Description

The NCTA is is focused on the preservation of folk and traditional arts in the United States, and maintains archives of folk music, dance, crafts, and stories. While national in scope, the National Council for the Tradition Arts (NCTA) is very cognizant of its local corporate responsibility, and so provides a variety of services for the local Maryland and Washington DC area.

Frisco Native American Museum [NC]

Description

The Frisco Native American Museum is located on Hatteras Island in the North Carolina Outer Banks and was first opened in 1987. The museum is the brainchild of Carl and Joyce Bornfriend, who still operate the museum year round. In addition to the exhibits and special programs in the structure, the museum offers several miles of nature trails.

Iroquois Indian Museum [NY]

Description

From the museum website: "The Iroquois Indian Museum is an anthropological museum that uses art to educate and inspire." The museum is located in upstate New York, and explores the history of the Iroquois Indians from pre-history to the present day.

George Washington Carver Museum [TX]

Description

The George Washington Carver Museum showcases local and national African American history with a focus on African American art.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, performances in the Boyd Vance Theatre, the Museum in a Basket program for local schools, special programs which focus on different aspects of African American history including photography, film, and folktales, various classes, and occasional special events. Miami Design Preservation League [FL]

Description

The Miami Design Preservation League seeks to preserve and share the history of Miami's architecture, both within and outside of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Miami is perhaps most widely known for its Art Deco architecture. However, the historic district includes Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern (MiMo) structures.

The league offers a film series, lectures, a gallery with exhibits related to the Art Deco movement, guided walking tours, iPod or cellphone self-guided walking tours, and guided bicycle or Segway tours.

New York State Historical Association [NY]

Description

The New York State Historical Association was founded to help preserve and promote the early history of the state of New York. Today, the association runs the Fenimore Art Museum, which is located in Cooperstown, and a extensive research library, which is also located in Cooperstown, and features over 88,000 volumes pertaining to early New York and American history.

The association offers a variety of programs designed for schoolchildren, such as workshops, gallery tours, spring field days, curriculum resources for teachers, and the distance learning program, where museum educators create a "virtual trip" to association museums. Demuth Museum [PA]

Description

The Demuth Museum presents the life and art work of Charles Demuth (1883-1935), as well as his historic late 18th-century family home. Demuth developed the artistic style called Precisionism; and he primarily utilized watercolors and oils. Next door is the Demuth's tobacco shop, established 1770, making it the oldest tobacco shop in the United States. The shop operates as a retail business, and is not part of the museum.

St. Ignatius Mission [MT]

Description

St. Ignatius Mission is an 1890s religious structure located in the present-day Flathead Indian Reservation. The mission contains 61 paintings by one of its brothers. Paintings include depictions of the Salish Lord. A museum presents artifacts related to both the mission and Native American peoples.

Eiteljorg Museum of the American Indians and Western Art [IN]

Description

The Eiteljorg Museum of the American Indians and Western Art presents Western-themed works of art and cultural information on Native Americans nation-wide. The museum collections are particularly strong in Plains and Southwest Native American artifacts. Displays emphasize Native American cultural diversity. Artworks include Modernist pieces, contemporary works in traditional manners, and the works of the Taos Society of Artists (1915-1927).

The museum offers museum and thematic guided tours, optional field trip studio activities led by artists-in-residence, hands-on cart programs, an interactive children's exhibit area, library access, 10 educational programs, and sack lunches. Reservations are required for school groups, as well as for any sack lunch needs. The website offers audio and video podcasts, a teacher's guide, educational activity suggestions, and lesson plans.

The Frick Art and Historical Center [PA]

Description

The Frick Art and Historical Center consists of the personal collections of Helen Clay Frick, daughter of Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919)—industrialist, steel tycoon, and major art connoisseur. The center includes the museum and Clayton, the Frick family's late Victorian home. The collection includes carriages, historic automobiles, and fine and decorative arts dating as far back as the Renaissance. Highlights include works by Jean-François Millet and an 1898 Panhard automobile.

The center offers themed tours of both the museum and Clayton, Act 48 educators' workshops, concerts, children's weekend workshops, summer camps, and more than 25 educational programs. The website offers lesson plans.
