Travel photography in the 19th century is the focus of this podcast, exploring the advent of wet-plate collodion technology, which spurred the advance of travel and landscape photography. Professor Jeff Curto places a special emphasis on photography of the American west.

Morris-Butler House [IN]

Description

Visitors to the 1865 Morris-Butler House can immerse themselves in the Victorian era. Tours, events, and exhibits at the museum highlight architecture, decorative arts, and family life in the 19th century. From the formal parlor to the private living quarters, visitors can see how an upper-middle-class family and its servants lived in the Victorian era. Rare furnishings fill rooms adorned with stenciled ceilings and elaborate wallpaper and plasterwork. In addition to its architecture, the museum contains a collection of 19th-century sculptures, paintings, and lithographs from all over the world.

The house offers exhibits, tours, occasional living history events, and other educational and recreational events and programs.

Contemporary Museum [HI]

Description

The Contemporary Museum presents art created after 1940. It is the only museum in Hawaii to focus solely on contemporary art. The museum gardens were designed between 1928 and 1941 by K. I. Inagaki. One of the two structures which houses the museum, the Spalding-Cooke House was originally a 1925 residence. All exhibits are temporary. Works selected address a variety of styles, geographical origins, and dates of creation. Artists represented within the collection include Josef Albers, Louise Nevelson, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, William Wegman, and Edward and Nancy Kienholz. Works include paintings, fiber and textile arts, assemblage, wood works, glass works, ceramics, photography, film, watercolors, drawings, metal works, and prints.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, guided student tours, guided garden tours, educational programs for students, research library access, artist talks, children's art classes, traveling trunks, teacher workshops, and a cafe. The library is open by appointment only, and many of the materials are available for circulation. All student options require at least two weeks advance notice. Reservations are recommended for the cafe.

Thomas T. Taber Museum [PA]

Description

The Thomas T. Taber Museum presents the history of the Lycoming County, Pennsylvania area between Native American predominance and the 20th century. Exhibits address Native American life, fine and decorative arts, and area geology, among other topics. Period rooms depict 19th century life. Highlights include more than 300 toy trains.

The museum offers exhibits, period rooms, 90-minute guided tours for students, and a summer day camp. Students taking the guided tour should bring their lunches. Activities and demonstrations can be added to student tours.

Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site [MA]

Description

The Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site commemorates the life of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), owner of the world's first full-scale landscape design office.

The site offers guided walking tours of Boston-area parks designed by Olmsted, outreach slide presentations, custom-designed educational programs in the "Emerald Necklace" parks, an educator's packet, and teachers' workshops.

The Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site is closed for construction. The site is expected to reopen in 2010.

Rye Historical Society and Square House Museum [NY]

Description

The Rye Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Rye, New York. To this end, the society operates the Square House Museum, located within a circa 1730 tavern, and the Knapp House Archives, housed in a circa 1670 residence. Collections include 8,000 artifacts ranging from vernacular items and costume to the decorative and fine arts. The archives boast more than 15,000 items. The Square House contains six period rooms which include recreations of a 19th-century bedroom, the village's 1904 council room, and an 18th-century tavern room.

The museum offers period rooms, exhibits, self-guided tours, guided tours, historic crafts, traveling trunks, bus tours, walking tours, hands-on history workshops, slide shows, and summer camp. The archives offer public access, exhibits, and historical gardens.

Weir Farm National Historic Site [CT]

Description

The Weir Farm National Historic Site is located in the summer retreat of famed artist J. Alden Weir. After several summers at the home, Weir transformed the location into a creative refuge for friends and fellow artists. Today, the home stands as a historic house museum, and also offers Weir Farm art center, which is an educational center and art museum.

The home offers guided tours, educational programs, workshops, field trip programs, and a gallery of artwork. City Lore [NY]

Description

City Lore seeks to preserve and share New York City's history. To this end, they have created the C.A.R.T.S. (Cultural Arts Resources for Teachers and Students) project; and maintain a resource library with more than 1,500 books, 120,000 slides, and audio and visual materials related to oral histories and traditional arts.

City Lore offers educator workshops; residencies, 8- to 20-week programs of fine arts, folk arts, historical, cultural, or folklore education; and a resource center. Appointments are required when visiting the resource center.

Alice Austen House Museum [NY]

Description

The Museum focuses on the life and times of the photographer Alice Austen. The house features views of New York Harbor, and displays a collection of negatives that depict turn-of-the-century American life.

The museum offers tours, educational programs, and recreational and educational events, and is open to the public throughout the year, with the exception of January and February. The website offers a brief history of the location along with basic visitor information.
