Over 150 years ago, Henry Wells and William G. Fargo founded a company that has gone on to become one of the largest financial services companies in the U.S. Today, it operates museum exhibits detailing U.S. history and the company's history at twelve of its offices: Fort Wayne, Indiana; Denver, CO; Tucson, AZ; Omaha, NE; Waco, TX; Astoria and La Grande, OR; and Seattle, WA. It also runs full museums documenting U.S. and company history in Portland, OR; Anchoraga, AK; Minneapolis, MN; Phoenix, AZ; and San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Los Angeles, CA.

The site offers exhibits, tours, and educational programs.

Fort Clark Trading Post State Historic Site

Description

Fort Clark Trading Post State Historic Site is one of the most important archaeological sites in the state because of its well-preserved record of the fur trade and of personal tragedy. More than 150 years ago, it was the scene of devastating smallpox and cholera epidemics that decimated most of the inhabitants of a Mandan and later an Arikara Indian village. The archaeological remains of the large earthlodge village, cemetery, and two fur trade posts (Fort Clark Trading Post and Primeau's Post) are protected at the site, located one and one-quarter mile west of the town of Fort Clark, Mercer County.

Site may not offer any interpretative services beyond a self-guided tour and signage.

Wadeson Cabin State Historic Site [ND]

Description

This hand-hewn oak log cabin stands on the east bank of the Sheyenne River. Built in 1878 by Carl Jensen and his nephew John Bjerke, the cabin served as a community hall, country store, pioneer home, and finally as an icehouse. There is a marker on the site.

The site is open to the public.

North American Slavery in Comparative Perspective

Description

The ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in December 1865 abolished slavery in the United States, formally, officially, and legally. A century and a half after Emancipation, however, the question of slavery still roils the waters of American life. This seminar, led by Ira Berlin, will view the development of chattel bondage in mainland North America from the perspective of the larger Atlantic world. Topics include the nature of the slave trade, the distinction between societies with slaves and slave societies, the evolution of plantation slavery, the transforming face of the Age of Revolutions, the remaking of slavery in the 19th century, and the contemporary debate about the meaning of slavery for American life.

A Rising People: Benjamin Franklin and the Americans

Description

During this one-week workshop, workshop fellows will walk the streets and alleys that Benjamin Franklin walked, step through the doorways that he knew, sit in the churches where he worshiped, and stroll around the houses and public buildings where he helped to found the United States. Fellows will also explore the many rooms of Benjamin Franklin's mind: writer, printer, civic leader, politician, diplomat, scientist, revolutionary, founder. They will read Franklin's words—published and personal—and those of other men and women who lived in the era. They will examine the key aspects of gender, of race, of social class, and diverse other topics.

Two types of credit will be available to each educator participating: Institute staff will assist educators in receiving continuing education credit (similar to Pennsylvania's Act-48 requirements). In addition, participants may register for graduate-level credit through the Pennsylvania State University, which will require both participation in all programs of the week-long workshop and additional readings and assignments.
