Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site [IN]

Description

"In 1867, William S. Culbertson spent about $120,000 to build his grand home in New Albany. Visitors to the Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site will learn more about the life and times of this successful businessman and philanthropist." The mansion has been restored to its state shortly after it was built, and offers visitors a portal to this beautiful time period as well as to the Culbertson family.

The site offers basic visitor information and event information. Also, since the site is part of the Indiana State Museum website, it offers links and information about all other Indiana State Museums and historic sites.

Landmark Inn State Historic Site [TX]

Description

Landmark Inn State Historic Site offers a respite for weary travelers. Ten rooms provide historic lodging. The inn began in the mid-1850s as a general store and small hotel. Today, the inn's staff welcomes guests. Next to the inn's lobby and general store are exhibits and a reception hall open for daily visits.

Cambridge Historical Society [MA]

Description

"The Cambridge Historical Society has been a repository of history and culture for over 100 years. We are an active non-profit (501.C.3) organization and are dedicated to promoting an interest in all aspects of the history and heritage of Cambridge." Founded in 1905, the Cambridge Historical Society seeks to preserve and promote Cambridge, MA, area history. The society owns and maintains the Hooper-Lee Nichols House, which is currently closed to tours for renovations, and the Brinkler Research Library, which contains an enormous collection of Cambridge-area books, newspapers, periodicals, documents, and photographs.

The site offers detailed information about all library holdings, but no library access, a virtual tour of and visitor information about the Hooper-Lee Nichols House, a listing of all publications, with information for prospective buyers, and an events calendar.

Riordan Mansion State Historic Park [AZ]

Description

The Riordan Mansion was built in 1904 for two Riordan families. The mansion is a remarkable example of the Arts and Crafts style of architecture. The house features a rustic exterior of log-slab siding, volcanic stone arches, and hand split wooden shingles. The house has 40 rooms, over 13,000 square feet of living area, and a servant's quarters. The Riordan Mansion was designed by the creator of the Grand Canyon's El Tovar Hotel, Charles Whittlesey. Guided tours of the mansion are offered daily.

The site offers an events calendar, a brief history of the Riordan Mansion, information on children's programs, a photo-gallery featuring 16 photographs of the mansion and its surrounding grounds, and a feature story highlighting one aspect of the park.

Heritage Ohio [OH]

Description

Heritage Ohio is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting organizations and individuals in preserving Ohio history. Heritage Ohio specifically focuses on preservation and downtown revitalization. To this end, Heritage Ohio has a number of statewide programs, such as the Main Street Program, which focuses on commercial district revitalization in communities across the state. In addition, Heritage Ohio puts out several publications, including a newsletter and fact sheets designed to aid in potential preservationists.

The site offers detailed information on all Heritage Ohio programs, basic information regarding the organization itself, and online access to Heritage Ohio's publications.

Hollywood Heritage, Inc. [CA]

Description

Hollywood Heritage Inc. is dedicated to preserving Hollywood's past. Hollywood Heritage takes an active role in issues involving the historic structures along the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment National Register District as well as other structures in Hollywood. In addition to fighting for the preservation of historic Hollywood structures, Hollywood Heritage Inc. also runs a museum and hosts a variety of events in their headquarters, the Wattles Mansion.

The site offers press releases and information for activists regarding current preservation efforts. In addition, the site offers an archive of past newsletters, and an events calendar.

Grapevine Heritage Foundation [TX]

Description

The Grapevine Heritage Foundation is dedicated towards the preservation of the history and historical structures of the town of Grapevine, Texas. To this end, the foundation has acquired a number of buildings in the last fifteen years. In 1991, Grapevine Heritage Foundation saved the Palace Theater, a classic Art Modern building. In addition, the Foundation owns the Thomas Jefferson Nash Farmstead and the Buckner Cash Grocery Store.

The site is actually part of the larger Grapevine Convention and Visitor's Bureau website. Thus, it offers information about upcoming events in the town of Grapevine, information for visitors including information on local hotels, and a small about section regarding the Foundation.

Geraldine Milwaukee Depot [MT]

Description

The Geraldine Milwaukee Depot is a fine example of America's early 20th century small town railroad depots. The Geraldine Milwaukee Depot is located in Geraldine, Montana and has received special attention due to its name, which derives from the namesake of the town of Geraldine, Geraldine Rockefeller. The Depot has been restored to its state in the early 1900s, and is available to the public by appointment.

The site is a division of the Montana State Travel Site, and so offers very basic information about the Depot intended for potential visitors.

Fenton Historical Society [MI]

Description

The Fenton Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in the United States. Founded in 1936, the society has worked since then to promote and showcase the history of Fenton through a variety of ways. The society maintains the Fenton Historical Museum, as well as an extensive library that chronicles the local history. In addition, the society is the main genealogical research center in Fenton.

The site offers library access, information for researchers, a fairly extensive history of the the founding of Fenton and early Fenton, a photo gallery with seven photographs of historical people and structures in Fenton, and archives of the newsletter put out by the society. As of Jan 23, 2009, only four newsletter are up online, but the society is working on adding the rest of the newsletters.

Indiana State Museum [IN]

Description

The Indiana State Museum explore Indiana's past, present and future through artistic, cultural, and scientific exhibits starting with the birth of Earth and tracing Hoosier history into the 21st century.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and educational and recreational events. The website offers visitor information and digital exhibits and digital access to the museum's collections. Finally, the site contains links to all of Indiana's state historic sites.
