Description

Hood River County Historical Museum presents the socio-cultural history of Hood River County, Oregon. Topics addressed within permanent exhibits include the daily lives of pioneer, Native American, and area ethnic groups, as well as Japanese Internment after Pearl Harbor.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, self-guided tours, activity tours, research assistance, a traveling trunk on the local fruit industry, and several school tour options. All guided tours are customized to group needs. Payment is required for research assistance.

Hurley Heritage Society [NY]

Description

The Hurley Heritage Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Hurley, New York. To this end, the society operates a museum of local history, located within the 1790 Col. Jonathan Elmendorf House. Main Street is a Historic Landmark District, containing six of Hurley's stone houses built between the late 1600s and 1818; and is used during guided tours to discuss local Dutch heritage.

The society offers exhibits, monthly guided walking tours of Main Street, guided group tours of individual stone houses, and a self-guided driving tour of the area. Reservations are required for stone house tours.

Museum of Work and Culture [RI]

Description

"This interactive museum presents story of immigrants who came to find a better life in the mill towns along the Blackstone River. School tours are available and include a guided tour of the museum, living history presentations, and a Blackstone River cruise.

Georgetown Historical Society and Nutter D. Marvel Museum [DE]

Description

The Georgetown Historical Society operates the Nutter D. Marvel museum of local history. Housed within two barns, a one-room schoolhouse, historic church, two railroad freight buildings, and a blacksmith shop, the museum presents a collection of carriages. Additional items in the collection include photographs; books; Georgetown, DE memorabilia; and newspaper clippings.

Pennsbury Manor [PA]

Description

The recreated country home of William Penn provides a peaceful contrast to the hurry of modern American life. The construction of the original manor was an expression of Penn's belief that life in the country was more wholesome than in the worldly atmosphere of crowded cities. Pennsbury Manor is permeated with the spirit of this kindly, devout humanitarian, and it gives the visitor a sense of the unhurried grace and charm of those years when Pennsylvania was William Penn's "Holy Experiment."

The site offers tours, demonstrations, workshops, educational programs, and recreational and educational events (including living history events).

Schoharie County Historical Society and Old Stone Fort [NY]

Description

The Schoharie County Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of the historical heritage of Schoharie County, NY. The society is headquartered in the Old Stone Fort, a Revolutionary War battle site that is currently operated jointly by Schoharie County and the historical society. The society owns six other buildings in the museum complex.

From the society's website: "The Society maintains a research library and a local genealogy collection, publishes a semi-annual local history magazine, and offers a full calendar of educational and recreational events." The website offers visitor information, an events calendar, a brief history of the Old Stone Fort, and information regarding society programs.

Preserve Rhode Island and Governor Henry Lippitt House

Description

Preserve Rhode Island operates several historical sites, including the Governor Henry Lippitt House. Built for textile merchant Henry Lippitt, his wife Mary Ann Balch Lippitt, and their six children, the house was completed in 1865 and occupied by several generations of the Lippitt family for 114 years. Over the years, the Governor Henry Lippitt family made only a few changes respecting the historic integrity of their ancestor's legacy. The majority of the family's furnishings still exist in the house.

The organization offers occasional recreational and educational events; the House offers tours.

Vachel Lindsay Home

Description

This antebellum site is the birthplace and longtime home of poet (Nicholas) Vachel Lindsay. Lindsay was internationally known in the early 20th century for his poetry, the artwork he created to illustrate the poetry, and his animated performances of his work.

Tuckerton Seaport [NJ]

Description

Tuckerton Seaport is a living history site dedicated to giving visitors a glimpse of life on the New Jersey waterfront. The seaport is home to the Melody II, a classic charter boat which is open for tours, as well as the Jersey Shore Folklife Center.

The seaport offers workshops, sailing classes, kayak tours, guided tours of the back bay, Melody II, and folklife center, and exhibits on Tuckerton history. The website offers visitor information, a brief history of the seaport, and an events calendar. Billings Farm and Museum [VT]

Description

The Billings Farm and Museum presents the history, culture, science, and environmental implications of Vermont farm life. Sights include a working dairy farm, an 1890s period-furnished farm house, and exhibits on family farming responsibilities in 1890. The 270-acre farm was established in 1873, and has maintained a herd of Jersey cows since that time. Other animals on site include oxen, Percheron horses, sheep, and chickens. Nearly 200 acres of the farm contain corn silage, alfalfa, and grass hay fields.

The museum offers films on the history of Billings farm, forestry, and environmental awareness; exhibits; hands-on butter making; milking demonstrations; heirloom garden tours; 19th-century children's games; sheep, pumpkin, apple, feed, chicken, calf, and cow programs; hands-on craft activities; research library access; and a snack counter. Appointments are required for library access. Wheelchairs are available for use on site. The 1890s Farm House is partially wheelchair accessible. Visitors are asked to refrain from feeding or petting the animals.
