Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site [GA]

Description

The Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site commemorates the Dahlonega Georgia Mint, which operated from 1838 until 1861, and is known for producing a wealth of gold dollars, quarter eagles, and half eagles, along with a small batch of three dollar gold coins. The coins are highly sought after by collectors today. Dahlonega was also a prominent gold mining site.

Lanier Mansion State Historic Site [IN]

Description

The Lanier Mansion State Historic Site preserves the former home of James Franklin Doughty Lanier (1800-1881), bank president and railroad promoter. The site presents information on both Lanier and life during the 19th century. The structure itself was completed in 1844, and is Greek Revival in style. The grounds include replanted heritage gardens, reflecting the home's Post-Civil War landscaping.

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania houses one of the most significant collections of historic railroad artifacts in the world. Devoted to preserving and interpreting the broad impact of railroad development on society, the Museum displays over 100 locomotives and cars from the mid-19th and 20th centuries, including the priceless Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Collection.

Houmas House Plantation and Gardens [LA]

Description

The Houmas House Plantation and Gardens is a historic estate in the vicinity of New Orleans. The land was originally granted to the Houmas people, who then sold it to Maurice Conway and Alexander Latil in the 18th-century. From there, the site was developed into a sugar plantation, eventually becoming the nation's largest sugar producer. The Greek Revival primary residence on site today was completed in 1828. The plantation suffered economic failure during the Great Depression, and ceased to be a working agricultural site. More recently, the house has been seen in the 1964 Bette Davis film Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and the televised competition Top Chef. Today, the house contains period furnishings.

The plantation offers guided tours, period rooms, and 38-acres of gardens.

Ybor City Museum State Park [FL]

Description

Don Vicente Martinez Ybor came to the frontier near Tampa and built a city that became the "Cigar Capital of the World." From the opening of the first cigar factory in 1886 until the 1930s, Ybor City flourished. This urban park is dedicated to the preservation of Ybor City's cultural heritage. The museum, housed in the historic Ferlita Bakery, traces the rich cultural history of Ybor City and the cigar-making industry. The museum has self-guided exhibits, with written and audio information, and a video presentation.

The park offers a short film, exhibits, tours, and demonstrations.

Horne Creek Farm [NC]

Once the Hauser family farm, Horne Creek enables visitors to experience farm life in North Carolina's northwestern Piedmont circa 1900. The site features the family's original farm house, a tobacco curing barn, a corn crib, adjacent fields under cultivation, and even a heritage apple orchard. Through programs ranging from old-fashioned ice cream socials to an annual corn shucking frolic, Horne Creek Living Historical Farm provides a unique opportunity to learn about the rural past.

California Oil Museum [CA]

Description

The California Oil Museum recounts the boom in black gold in the city of Santa Paula during the late 19th century. The museum contains exhibits that display oil rigging tools, oil advertisements, wildcatter memorabilia, and other relevant artifacts.

School tours are available for K-12 with the option of hands-on educational programs.

Tuckerton Seaport [NJ]

Description

Tuckerton Seaport is a living history site dedicated to giving visitors a glimpse of life on the New Jersey waterfront. The seaport is home to the Melody II, a classic charter boat which is open for tours, as well as the Jersey Shore Folklife Center.

The seaport offers workshops, sailing classes, kayak tours, guided tours of the back bay, Melody II, and folklife center, and exhibits on Tuckerton history. Greenbelt Museum [MD]

Description

Greenbelt was developed as a New Deal planned community in 1937. A historic house museum presents middle class life during the Great Depression and World War II. Years depicted range from 1936 to 1952. Furnishings within the interior were designed by the New Deal’s Special Skills Division. Thew New Deal, introduced by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt between 1933 and 1935, sought to offer relief to the unemployed and stimulate the economy of the Great Depression era (1929-the late 1930s or early 1940s).

The museum offers guided tours, exhibits, lectures, educational programs, self-guided walking tours, and 90-minute guided walking tours.
