This Geography Awareness Week workshop will begin with a lecture on migration to the U.S. from Latin America. Lessons from the Geography Action! packet will then be introduced. The session will conclude with guided tours of four Latin-American art exhibits at the Fowler Museum.
The conference, which is geared towards secondary Social Studies, English and Spanish teachers, offers educators the opportunity to meet and interview former child laborers and trafficking victims, and attend a film festival and lectures by top scholars and human rights activists working in the field. The conference will provide the first forum in the United States for intensive training in the internationally acclaimed, interdisciplinary SCREAM—Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, the Arts and Media— program, developed by the International Labour Organization, International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO/IPEC). SCREAM offers cutting edge pedagogy, ideal for adapting and differentiating instruction to accommodate students' different learning needs and styles.
The highlight of the program will be the forum where former child laborers from South America and victims of trafficking within the US will share their stories. These stories will be videotaped for classroom use and conference participants will develop teaching ideas to accompany these narratives which will be published for use in the schools.

"Movements for women’s equality and gender justice have transformed American society over the past few generations. Nancy Cott will focus this seminar on the varied branches of feminism. After reviewing the suffrage campaign and opportunities for women during World War II, the seminar will explore convergences and conflicts among women’s groups, both feminist and conservative, emerging after 1960. Topics include the formation of the National Organization for Women, radical feminism, African American and Chicana feminism, reproductive rights advocacy, the women’s health movement, Roe v. Wade and its opponents, the women’s rights revolution in law, and the campaigns for and against the Equal Rights Amendment."
"Participants who complete the seminar in a satisfactory manner will receive a certificate. Teachers may use this certificate to receive in-service credit, subject to the policy of their district. No university credit is offered for the course."

"From Miami's Little Havana to the immigrant world of West Tampa, from Immokalee farm worker centers to the cigar cities of Key West and Ybor City, Latinos have helped to shape Florida's cultural fabric. Examine the complexities of race, culture, ethnicity, identity, and nationality through a Latin lens. Probe the implications of the New Latino political movements, debates about immigrant rights, and the politics of diversity in our attempt to build a definition of what it means to be 'Floridian' in the new century."
At this workshop participants will engage in dynamic, in-depth, interdisciplinary study of the Alamo and associated major themes of American history, literature, and popular culture. They will study in intimate seminar settings with major scholars, interact with their colleagues in lively conversations, and develop classroom teaching activities based on individual interdisciplinary research conducted in the Alamo Library Archives, the Institute of Texans Cultures, the American History Center and other Texas archives while working in seminars with five nationally recognized Texas scholars.
The conference theme is "Latino/a Communities in the Midwest." Latino/a populations and communities are growing rapidly across the country and are found in every sector of life in the United States.
"The Museum of Ventura County promotes understanding of Ventura County’s history, art and culture through collections, exhibitions, publications, public programs and research." The museum first opened in 1913 and was known as the pioneer museum. The museum was known throughout the country for its interesting a varied collection of pioneer artifacts. The museum moved to its current location in 1973, and is now undergoing an extensive renovation. The museum currently holds an impressive range of collections, which chronicle Ventura County's history from ancient times to now.
