West Chicago Historical Society and Kruse House Museum

Description

The Society oversees the care of the Kruse House Museum. The Kruse House is a 1917 four-square home depicting the Fred Kruse family lifestyle. The house is furnished with period furnishings and collections including china, quilts, jewelry, toys, cut glass, and Chicago and Northwestern railroad history artifacts. The backyard boasts a period garden which has been restored and is being maintained by the West Chicago Garden Club. Each year the Kruse House has a special exhibit along with the ongoing household and railroad memorabilia. Recent exhibits include dolls, clocks, toys, musical instruments, wedding attire, dining customs, planes trains and automobiles, and quilts.

The museum offers exhibits.

Iowa County Historical Society and Pioneer Heritage Museum

Description

Visitors to the Society's Museum can see an 1861 log house, 1856 cabin, and 1930s filling station. Also on the half-block museum site is the 1861 Chicago Rock Island Depot which originally was in Victor, IA, and a 1900 period farmhouse. Each structure has period furnishings and other historical items. The filling station display includes an antique race car and 1938 fire truck. The new addition houses clothing and military displays, original furnishing from the Gritter School, and items that would be found in a country store. The museum's collection of uniforms and military gear spans from the Spanish American War through the Civil War, World War I, World War II (including both men's and women's uniforms), Vietnam, and Desert Storm.

The museum offers exhibits and research library access.

Kaw Mission State Historic Site

Description

The Kaw Mission houses a museum that tells the story of the building that was home and school to thirty Kaw boys from 1851–1854. The Kaw lived in the Neosho Valley for less than thirty years when, despite an impassioned plea by Chief Allegawaho, the U.S. government removed the Kaw to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). At the museum, visitors can learn more about Chief Allegawaho, the Kaw Indians, and others who lived in the area.

The site offers exhibits, a short film, and tours.

Indiana Historical Society and History Center

Description

Since 1830, the Society has connected people to the past by collecting, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating the state's history. A nonprofit membership organization, the IHS also publishes books and periodicals; sponsors teacher workshops; provides youth, adult, and family programming; provides support and assistance to local museums and historical groups; and maintains the nation's premier research library and archives on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. The society also maintains the Indiana History Center, where events and programs are held and exhibits housed.

The center offers exhibits, tours, lectures, film screenings, research library access, and educational and recreational programs.

Glessner House Museum [IL]

Description

Glessner House Museum engages diverse audiences in exploring urban life and design through the preservation and interpretation of the architecture of Henry Hobson Richardson and the historic home of John and Frances Glessner. In addition to its architectural trust, the museum protects and conserves an outstanding collection of 19th- and early-20th-century furniture and decorative art objects. As one of the country's premier sites for the study and enjoyment of decorative arts, Glessner House Museum offers both the casual visitor and the serious connoisseur a unique opportunity to explore the Aesthetic and English Arts and Crafts movements.

Camp Dennison Civil War Museum

Description

Camp Dennison, just outside of Cincinnati, was a military training camp and hospital camp during the Civil War. Today, visitors to Camp Dennison will find the 1804 Waldschmidt House Historical Museum and the Ohio Civil War Museum on site. The area offers information and insight into the Civil War and the happenings at Camp Dennison during this time period.

The museum offers tours, exhibits, and educational and recreational programs.

Phelps County Historical Society and Nebraska Prairie Museum

Description

The mission of the Nebraska Prairie Museum is to be a historical, interactive resource for the community, through the collection of artifacts, archival documents, and memorabilia that explain the lifestyles of the area's past residents. The Museum contains over one acre of indoor exhibits, including collections of period clothing, antique toys, farm equipment, tools, and household items, as well as a unique World War II German POW exhibit room.

Gary Historical and Cultural Society

Description

The Society seeks to uplift and enrich Gary, Indiana, and surrounding communities by preserving, developing, and sponsoring cultural, historical, and educational programs for citizens of all ages. The Socieety was a catalyst behind the preservation and national historic landmark status of Gary's first building—the 1906 Gary Land Company Building. The Society maintains the buildings as an historical museum and visitor's bureau for school tour groups and visitors to Gary.
