This workshop will "combine scholarly presentations with on-site investigations of the canals, mills, worker housing, and exhibits of Lowell National Historical Park and of other sites in Lowell's historic district. Sessions draw on scholarly monographs, primary sources, and works of literature and historical fiction. It will intersperse lecture-discussions, hands-on activities, and field investigations. In addition to Lowell’s landmark resources, it will take full advantage of Old Sturbridge Village exhibits and scholars to explore pre-industrial rural life and draw on the expertise of scholars and presenters at Walden Pond and the Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, to explore how prominent authors addressed the question of industrialization’s effect on American life, values, and the environment." Specific topics will include "American Industrialization: Lowell, Massachusetts, in International Context," "Comparing Farm and Factory Life, and Cash and Market Economies," "Market Volatility, Competition, and Worker Responses to the New Industrial Order," "Industrialization and Nature: A Comparison of Lowell and Concord," and "Immigration and Industrialization: Poverty or Upward Mobility?."

Big Mound Battlefield State Historic Site [ND]

Description

A headstone here marks the place where Dr. Josiah S. Weiser was shot on July 24, 1863. This death precipitated the Battle of Big Mound, a skirmish between General Henry H. Sibley's Minnesota Volunteers and a group of Sioux who were believed to have been involved in the Dakota Conflict of 1862.

Tallmadge Church [OH]

Description

A Tallmadge committee of seven men developed plans for building this church in 1819 and appointed one of their members, Lemuel Porter, as the architect and builder. The church raising began in July of 1822 and the church was dedicated on 8 September 1825. Reflecting Porter's design, the wood, brace-framed church features a Greek Revival portico, supported by four large columns, and a dominant 100-foot-high steeple with a weathervane.

Menoken Indian Village State Historic Site [ND]

Description

This site preserves a prehistoric earthlodge village site surrounded by a large fortification ditch with four clearly defined bastions. Although archaeologists originally thought the village dated 1780–1845, they now believe it may have been occupied as early as A.D. 1100. There is a marker on the site.

Albany Mounds

Description

One of the most important archaeological sites in Illinois, Albany Mounds contains evidence of continuous human occupation over the last 10,000 years. The Mounds date from the Middle Woodland (Hopewell) period (200 BCE–CE 300), older than either the Cahokia or Dickson Mounds of the Mississippian period. The only Middle Woodland site owned by the state, Albany Mounds originally was made up of 96 burial mounds. At least 39 of the mounds remain in good condition, while eight have been partially destroyed through erosion, excavation, or cultivation. Burial artifacts include non-local materials, indicating the existence of trading networks with Native Americans from other areas. The mounds were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In the 1990s the site was "restored" to a natural appearance and a prairie of about 100 acres established. The site also contains a parking lot and picnic shelter, walking trails, and interpretive signs along a bike trail. The Friends of the Albany Indian Mounds Foundation is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the site.
