Grissom Air Museum State Historic Site [IN]

Description

The Grissom Air Museum is one of the nation's fastest growing aviation museums, and features an impressive collection of military aircraft. The museum's aircraft are located outside, and can be viewed from the museum's Cold War era observation tower. Inside the museum, the museum has a variety of airplane technology and memorabilia displays, along with a wall of honor.

Selfridge Military Air Museum [MI]

Description

The Selfridge Military Air Museum is located on the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, and is home to an impressive collection of military air technology. In addition, the museum is home to a collection of air combat memorabilia, including newspapers, patches, and photographs.

History Center of Olmsted County and Mayowood Estate [MN]

Description

The History Center of Olmstead County presents the history of Olmstead County, Minnesota. To this end, the center operates as a museum. The museum includes rooms devoted to the decorative arts; a hands-on children's cabin; and exhibits on topics which include IBM, St. Mary's Hospital, the 1883 Rochester tornado, and historical medicine. Artifact collections include textiles, military, decorative arts, Native American, agricultural and mechanical, and medical items. The center also operates the Mayowood Estate historic house museum. Erected in 1911 as the home of Dr. Charles H. Mayo, cofounder of the Mayo Clinic, Mayowood now contains period rooms.

The museum offers exhibits, educational programs, hands-on activities, museum tours, traveling trunks, and library access. Reservations are required for tours. Women in History [OH]

Description

Women in History seeks to increase awareness of women's impact on U.S. history through dramatic re-creations of the lives of notable female figures. Costumes are period or patterned from period pieces, and hairstyles are created by a specialist in historic hair design. The organization is able to portray more than 100 historical figures.

The organization offers presentations, which generally include two 25-minute living history presentations by costumed "historical figures," an opening and closing, and time for questions and answers. The organization also offers two programs designed specifically for elementary and middle school students.

Pender County Museum [NC]

Description

The Pender County Museum presents the history of Pender County, North Carolina. Collection highlights include a whiskey still, historical farming equipment, decorative arts pieces, World War II artifacts, and medical artifacts.

The museum offers exhibits, 41 oral history transcriptions from World War II veterans, and library access.

Monmouth Battlefield State Park and Craig House [NJ]

Description

One of the largest battles of the American Revolution took place in the fields and forests that now make up Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The park preserves a splendid rural 18th-century landscape of hilly farmland and hedgerows that encompasses miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, picnic areas, a restored Revolutionary War farmhouse (the Craig House), and a visitors center. During the Battle of Monmouth, the Craig House was the home of John and Ann Craig and their three children and was used as a hospital by the British forces in June of 1778.

U.S. Naval Academy Museum [MD]

Description

The U.S. Naval Academy Museum presents the historical and modern role of the United States Navy—both in times of war and in times of peace. Emphasis is placed on artifacts related to Naval officers and Naval Academy alumni. Artifacts on display include those related to the USS Constitution, the USS Monitor, Edward Preble, Isaac Hull, John Dahlgren, and William Halsey. Other collection highlights include ship models made in the 18th century.

Fort Trumbull State Park [CT]

Description

Visitors to the site can receive an interactive history lesson at the visitor's center, or just walk the Fort and ramparts for a view of the Thames River. The fort contains informative markers and displays, a touchable cannon and artillery crew display, and gun emplacements. The fort interior features 19th-century restored living quarters, a mock laboratory, and a 1950s era office furnished to resemble a research and development lab at the facility. The visitor center contains state-of-the-art multimedia theaters, computer touch-screen interactive exhibits, 3-D models, and extensive graphics and text panels. The center depicts over 225 years of military history and technological advances from the Revolutionary War to the Cold War. Some of the main display themes include the September 6, 1781 attack by the British under the command of Benedict Arnold, the U-boat menace during World War II, and the anti-submarine efforts during the Cold War.

New Hope Historical Society and Parry Mansion [PA]

Description

The New Hope Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of New Hope, PA, which has served as a home to the Lenni-Lenape, Dutch, English, and Quakers, among others. The society operates the Parry Mansion, a 1784 residence which currently displays 124 years of the decorative arts. Each room speaks to a different period of the Parry family's inhabitance.

The society offers guided tours of the mansion and 1-mile guided tours of the neighborhood. Neighborhood tours discuss citizens of note, the Revolutionary War, and the fishing industry.

San Diego Maritime Museum [CA]

Description

The San Diego Maritime Museum presents one of the world's strongest collections of historic vessels. Highlights include an 1898 steam ferry, the Berkeley; a 1904 steam yacht, the Medea; a B-39 Soviet attack submarine; and the 1863 Star of India, the world's oldest active ship. Replicas include the HMS Surprise, an 18th-century Royal Navy Frigate used in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and the Californian, a mid-1800s revenue cutter. Exhibits include the ages of sail and steam, the Navy, navigation and surveying, and the tuna industry.

The museum offers one- or two-hour historic cruises on the 1914 Pilot; overnight and day history role playing educational programs; science programs; an educational sailing program aboard the Californian; guided museum tours; exhibits; tours of the Star of India, HMS Surprise, B-39 Submarine, Berkeley, and the Medea; and world cruises led by historians.
