Description

The institute is divided into three levels, as follows:

101: This 40-hour training begins with an in-depth study of the Declaration of Independence. Participants will then be taken through the ancient and European origins of the U.S. Constitution, followed by the American origins. The training will continue with a famous Federalist debating a famous Anti-Federalist over whether a New York State convention should vote to ratify the Constitution in 1788.

Then attending teachers will be taken on a walk through the seven articles of the Constitution. The remainder of the time will be spent studying the First Amendment and famous Supreme Court cases on the First Amendment, including the current term cases.

The agenda is divided into blocks of time spent with scholars, followed by break-out sessions where activities are demonstrated on the curriculum covered in the scholar sessions.

201: Available to those teachers who have completed the 101 session, the advanced session begins with a look at the "Ladder of the Bill of Rights." The remainder of the three-day, 18-hour institute is spent studying Amendments Two through 10, along with Supreme Court cases decided under each of these amendments. Break-out sessions follow each scholar session with activities on the Bill of Rights.

301: The one-day, seven-hour Update Session is available to those teachers who have previously attended both 101 and 201. Participants will spend most of the time discussing Supreme Court cases that have been decided during the past few years with the scholars. They will also receive a new activity guide, which includes lessons on Federalism and writing.

Signature Conference: America on the Eve of the Civil War

Description

This conference will bring together nationally-recognized Civil War historians for an open dialogue about the state of the country in 1859. What was happening two years before the firing of the first shots in the nation's deadliest conflict? What did people know and what were they thinking? Could they possibly have imagined the horror that was to come?

"America on the Eve of the Civil War" brings a fresh perspective on enduring issues. The program will be conducted in an interactive format with speakers from varied perspectives. Akin to news programs like "Face the Nation" and "Meet the Press," speakers will discuss events of 1859 and their effect, limiting themselves only to what would have been known at that time.

The focus of the conference will be the situation in the United States in what turned out to be the eve of the Civil War, including central events and changes of the late antebellum era.

American Indians in the United States

Description

Participants in this course will discover American Indian history in the United States from the earliest evidence of human habitation through first contact with Europeans, conflicts in the West, World War II and other key events in 20th-century U.S. history, the American Indian rights movement, and into the present day.

Archaeological finds, traditional stories, the writings of early European explorers, government documents and treaties, oral histories, photographs, the arts, newspaper articles, and more will enrich exploration of key issues in Native American history nationwide.

The course will proceed chronologically. Within each topical module participants will have the opportunity to choose from several different geographically grouped assignments, allowing them to customize their own learning experience based on their interests, the demands of the curriculum, and their own priorities for teaching American Indian history.

For example, in any given unit, they may choose to focus on the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, the Great Plains, the Northeast, or the Southeast. They may either follow one geographical track throughout the course or mix up their selections to allow for a broader view of American Indian history.

African American History to 1950

Description

Participants in this course will examine African American history in the contexts of United States, North Carolina, and world history. They will begin by connecting the experiences of African Americans in early U.S. history to the histories and cultures of the African communities of their ancestors and will follow those cultural connections between Africa and the United States throughout the course.

Course topics include African Americans in the colonies and the early Republic, the Middle Passage, American slavery and the experiences of free African Americans in the antebellum period, the abolition movement, the Civil War and Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and the experiences of African Americans during World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Throughout the course, participants will discuss African American activism through churches, political organizations, and communities and discover African American culture through art, music, and other cultural forms.

Robert E. Lee Symposium on Civil War History

Description

Stratford Hall, the home of the Lees of Virginia and birthplace of Robert E. Lee, hosts its first symposium dedicated to the further study of General Robert E. Lee and various issues relating to the American Civil War. This program includes tours of the nearby Fredericksburg, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Battlefields, some of the bloodiest combat of the Civil War.

Historians Peter Carmichael, Aaron Sheehan-Dean, and Elizabeth Brown Pryor will lead the group. The focus is on Robert E. Lee as a general, the use of primary documents in uncovering new dimensions to Civil War personalities, and the importance of the Fredericksburg and Overland Campaigns.

Abraham Lincoln: A Man for His Time and a Man for All Times

Teach Vietnam Teachers Network

Description

The Teach Vietnam Teachers Network is a nationwide network of educators at all grade levels who are dedicated to teaching students about the Vietnam War era and building awareness of the Memorial Fund's educational initiatives. Members of the Network represent the Memorial Fund in their school districts and communities, helping to educate other teachers and neighbors about the war's legacy and how it continues to impact the nation today.

The Memorial Fund provides educators chosen to join the Network with educational resources and hosts a national conference in Washington, DC to help members develop lesson plans. Workshops and seminars about the Vietnam War and the Wall will be led by veterans, fellow teachers, and other guest experts. The conference also includes activities at the Wall. The next Teach Vietnam Teachers Network National Conference will be held July 15–19 at American University.
