Virginia War Museum

Description

The Virginia War Museum follows the history of the U.S.'s involvement in war, from the Revolutionary War to the present day, with galleries focusing on the role of women and African Americans in military history, the place of Virginia in war efforts, and the development of weaponry over the centuries.

The museum offers exhibits, educational programs and tours for school groups, in-class outreach presentations, research library access by appointment, and occasional recreational and educational events.

West Point Museum [NY]

Description

The West Point Museum maintains the oldest and largest diversified public collection of miltaria in the Western Hemisphere. Its collections include nearly all aspects of military history and encompass the history of West Point and the United States Military Academy, the evolution of warfare, and the development of the American Armed Forces.

The museum offers exhibits on the full arc of U.S. military history.

NOTE: The Museum is located on West Point U.S. Military Academy grounds and is not available for self-guided tour without prior orientation at the Visitors Center.

USS Constitution [MA]

Description

The USS Constitution, or "Old Ironsides," is the oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat in the world. Built in 1797, the wooden ship saw active service until 1881, taking part in the War of 1812 and, as a training ship, in the Civil War.

Today, visitors may tour the Constitution.

Arsenal [LA]

Description

Built in 1839, the Arsenal was designed by noted architect James Dakin and is associated with an infamous battle that happened after the Civil War. During the period of Reconstruction several clashes occurred throughout the state between integrated and white supremacist groups. In 1874, the Battle of Liberty Place, wherein the Metropolitan Police of New Orleans were pitted against the Crescent City White League, occurred. The White League prevailed, forcing the Metropolitan Police into the Customhouse and the Cabildo. From the adjacent Arsenal, the Police fought back by shooting cannonballs toward Chartres Street.

Today, the Arsenal offers exhibits and occasional recreational and educational events.

Museum of Aviation Flight and Technology Center [GA]

Description

The Museum houses a collection of over 100 aircraft, missiles, and cockpits dating from a replica of an early 1896 glider to modern-era aircraft such as the B-1B bomber, the SR-71 Blackbird, the U-2 Dragon Lady and F-15 Eagle. Exhibits tell the story of aviation events from World War II to the present, including exhibits depicting the mission of Robins Air Force Base, the largest industrial employer in Georgia.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Florida Holocaust Museum

Description

The Museum honors the memory of millions of innocent men, women, and children who suffered or died in the Holocaust. It is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides.

The museum offers exhibits, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Navy Museum [DC]

Description

The Museum presents an overview of U.S. naval history. Permanent and temporary exhibitions commemorate the Navy's wartime heroes and battles as well as its peacetime contributions in exploration, diplomacy, space flight, navigation, and humanitarian service.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.
