Adams County Historical Society [PA]

Description

The Adams County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Adams County, PA, and its people. To this end, the society operates a museum, located within the dormitory of the first U.S. Lutheran seminary, founded in 1826. The building later served as a Civil War hospital. Exhibit topics include iron works, social classes, pre-history, county development between 1745 and 1945, the Civil War and Battle of Gettysburg, mortuary equipment and mourning practices, religion, education, children's toys, furniture making, seminary history, and circa 1900 dorm life. Other holdings include more than 200,000 photographs and negatives, manuscripts, and county records.

The society offers exhibits, guided museum tours, guided behind-the-scenes tours, research library access, and research services. Appointments are required for all tours to ensure docent availability, with tours only being offered to groups of 10 or more. Students and members may use the research library free of charge. A fee is charged for research conducted upon request.

National Council for the Traditional Arts [MD]

Description

The NCTA is is focused on the preservation of folk and traditional arts in the United States, and maintains archives of folk music, dance, crafts, and stories. While national in scope, the National Council for the Tradition Arts (NCTA) is very cognizant of its local corporate responsibility, and so provides a variety of services for the local Maryland and Washington DC area.

The NCTA puts on folk festivals throughout the country, presents traditional art touring programs, and works with local schools to present traditional arts to schoolchildren. The website offers information about all of the programs offered by the NCTA and an events calendar.

Beaufort Historical Association [NC]

Description

The Beaufort Historical Association works to preserve and showcase the history of Beaufort, North Carolina. The association works closely with the Beaufort Historic Site, which is located in downtown Beaufort, and which showcases the history of this quaint seaport.

The Beaufort Historic Site offers guided tours of historic homes, living history demonstrations, a variety of student programs including a courthouse dramatization and the Harvest Time program which gives students a view into colonial Beaufort, and tours of the nearby Old Burying Ground. George Washington Carver Museum [TX]

Description

The George Washington Carver Museum showcases local and national African American history with a focus on African American art.

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame [KS]

Description

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is located in the heart of old town Wichita and is dedicated to honoring the many great athletes from Kansas. The Hall of Fame has 176 current inductees, and is open to visitors year round.

The Hall of Fame offers exhibits on past Kansas athletic greats and guided tours. Admission is free for school groups. The website offers brief biographies of all past inductees, visitor information, and an events calendar.

Textile Museum [DC]

Description

The Textile Museum presents the cultural significance and artistry of world textiles. The museum library contains more than 20,000 volumes, including listings of educational programs and textile collections; and the artifact collection contains over 18,000 artifacts from around the world—with the oldest dating to 3,000 B.C.E.

The museum offers guided highlights tours, interactive educational tours, hands-on activities, teacher workshops, and supporting materials for selected exhibits. Reservations are required for educational tours. The website offers digital exhibits.
