Description

The Aspen Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Aspen Valley, from its original Indian inhabitants up through its modern-day status as one of the world's premier skiing destinations. The society operates seven historic sites, ranging from mining ghost towns to historic house museums.

The society offers guided tours of its museums and historic sites, research resources, field trip programs, a traveling trunk program, and special events. The website offers visitor information, access to the society's archives, lesson plans for teachers, a calendar of events, and detailed historical information about Aspen.

Museum Village [NY]

Description

Museum Village is a living history site depicting 19th-century life. The site includes a replica 1805 schoolhouse, general store, drug store, 18th-century cabin, weave shop, candle shop, broom shop, blacksmith shop, wagon shop, print shop, pottery shop, costume exhibit building, and natural history building. The natural history building houses a mastodon skeleton.

The village offers interactive and traditional exhibits, costumed interpreters, demonstrations, hands-on activities, a summer day camp, five curriculum-based workshops for students, and picnic tables. Workshops topics include candle making, open hearth cooking, stenciling, printing, and natural dyeing. The site is only partially wheelchair accessible.

Catalina Island Museum [CA]

Description

The Catalina Island Museum presents 7,000 years of the history of Santa Catalina Island. Permanent exhibit topics include the Gabrielinos, resort history, sport fishing, media history, Avalon's casino, the Chinese junk Ning Po, steamships, and ranching. The museum collections consist of more than 150,000 artifacts. Collection highlights include Catalina tiles and Gabrielino artifacts.

The museum offers exhibits, Avalon walking tours, customizable lectures and tours, student tours, and a research center. An appointment and two weeks notice is required for archival or collections access.

Tannenbaum Historic Park [NC]

Description

The 7-acre Tannenbaum Historic Park preserves a portion of the farmstead of Joseph Hoskins, used to host British troops for the 1781 Battle of Guilford Courthouse. The site presents rural life prior to, during, and after the Revolutionary War via a heritage center, the 1813 Hoskins House, a restored 1830s barn, and a replica period blacksmith shop and kitchen.

The site offers period rooms and exhibits.

Jack House and Gardens [CA]

Description

The 1880 Jack House and Gardens presents the home of San Luis Obispo, California's Jack family. The Jacks—ranchers, politicians, land developers, and bankers—lived in the home for more than 90 years, and the site is furnished with many of their personal belongings. The home is decorated to interpret Victorian daily life, and the gardens include period varieties of roses.

The house offers period rooms, guided tours, and self-guided gardens tours.

Grayson County Historical Society and Museum [KY]

Description

The Grayson County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Grayson County, Kentucky. To this end, the society operates a museum and research library within the circa 1814 Jack Thomas House. The society also operates the 1835 Buchanan Log Cabin, which houses home and farm tools. Highlights within the cabin include a handmade loom, over a century in age.

The society offers exhibits, tours of the Buchanan Log Cabin, and research library access.

Crowley Heritage Museum [CO]

Description

The Crowley Heritage Museum presents the history of Crowley County, Colorado, founded in 1911. At this time, recent irrigation developments had permitted Crowley County to become one of the most fruitful agricultural areas within Colorado. The area also displayed ethnic diversity—with farmers of German, Hispanic, and Japanese descent. Collection highlights include ranching artifacts and several types of barbed wire. The museum is located within a 1914 school building.

The museum offers exhibits.

Berrien County Historical Association and The History Center at Courthouse Square [MI]

Description

The Berrien County Historical Association seeks to preserve and share the history of Berrien County, Michigan, founded in 1831. To this end, the society operates The History Center at Courthouse Square. Sights include the 1839 Court House, complete with reproduction furnishings and local history exhibits; two reconstructed jail cells; the circa 1830 Murdock Log House, also stocked with period furnishings; and Bennett's Forge, a working blacksmith shop.

The association offers exhibits, tours, student tours, a mock trial educational program for students, living history outreach programs for schools, lectures, and archives access. Please call ahead to schedule use of the archives, plan school visits, or request outreach programming. Outreach program options include talks by a Civil War soldier or French voyageur.

Fort Robinson Museum [NE]

Description

From Crazy Horse to the cavalry to the K-9 Corps, Fort Robinson played host to them all. Visitors to the site can experience the long and varied history of this outpost on the Plains. The museum at Fort Robinson is located in the 1905 post headquarters building. Museum exhibits trace the history from the post's role guarding the Red Cloud Agency (1874–77) through the housing of World War II German POWs (1943–46). Among the many fascinating objects in the museum's exhibits are the only known dog kennel from the K-9 Corps of World War II; marksmanship medals earned by Caleb Benson, a Buffalo Soldier at Fort Robinson between 1902 and 1909; and 19th-century Sioux objects related to the Red Cloud Agency. Visitors can explore more than a dozen historic structures and sites such as the 1904 blacksmith shop, the 1908 veterinary hospital, the 1887 officers' quarters, the 1875 guardhouse and adjutant's office, and the old post cemetery.

The site offers exhibits, tours, research library access, and occasional recreational and educational events.
