Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site [LA]

Description

The Plaquemine Lock was completed in 1909 and was designed by Colonel George Goethals, who would later become famous for designing the Panama Canal. When it was completed, the lock was the highest freshwater lock in the world. By 1961, the demand had outgrown the old lock and a new set of locks was opened at Port Allen. The Plaquemine Lock was placed on the national register of historic places in 1972. Now, the area includes the old lock and the Gary James Herbert Memorial Lockhouse, which serves as a museum for the lock.

Kentucky Heritage Council [KY]

Description

The State of Kentucky has an exceptional variety of historic sites, ranging from architectural sites and pioneer buildings to historic rail towns and American Indian villages. The Kentucky Heritage Council is entrusted with identifying, preserving, and protecting the historic resources of Kentucky. The council has spent the last 40 years assisting individuals and communities with making historic preservation an integral part of community planning and economic development. To this end, the Kentucky Heritage Council puts on a variety of educational events focusing on Kentucky history and also works to preserve historical structures and resources.

The site offers a wealth of information on current Kentucky Heritage Council projects and ways to get involved. In addition, the site offers an archive of all recent and past news releases and links for prospective preservationists.

Geneva Historical Society [NY]

Description

The Geneva Historical Society seeks to preserve and interpret the history of Geneva, New York and its denizens through its collections, educational programs, historic properties, and the Fund for Historic Geneva. The Geneva Historical Society Museum and offices are located in the Prouty-Chew House, which features marvelous period rooms, costume displays, and changing exhibits on Geneva's history and culture. The site also features a gift shop, staff offices, collections storage, programming space, and the Society's archives and library, which are open to researchers, genealogists, and the public.

The site offers brief historic and visitor information on all historic properties held by the Geneva Historical Society, along with an events calendar, information on current exhibits, and information on the educational sessions offered by the society.

Ardenwood Historic Farm [CA]

Description

Ardenwood Historic Farm is the historic home of George Washington Patterson. Patterson came west in 1849 during the gold rush to seek his fortune; instead he settled at Ardenwood Farm in southern Alameda County. The Historic Farm is faithfully restored and features agricultural practices from the 1870s to the present, demonstrating the transition from horse-powered equipment to modern farming equipment. There are more attractions than just the house, however. The park also features a horse-drawn train, victorian garden, animal farms, and a restored blacksmith shop.

The site offers general information about the park for visitors, a calendar of events, a trail map, and information regarding field trips for educators.

Hubbardston Area Historical Society

Description

" The purpose of the Hubbardston Area Historical Society shall be to promote the preservation, understanding and appreciation of the historical and cultrual heritage of Hubbardston and the surrounding area by:
1. encouraging historical and genealogical study and research,
2. collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting historical and cultural objects, artifacts and sites,
3. encouraging public participation in the activities of the society through publications, programs and the preservation of archives and historical collections and to encourage the establishment and operation of a local historical museum."

Berlin Area Historical Society

Description

The Berlin Area Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history and genealogy of Berlin, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding area. Currently, the society maintains a genealogy building, a records building/museum, and two faithfully restored buildings, the Heritage Haus and Glade One-Room Schoolhouse.

Heritage Hill State Historical Park

Description

"Heritage Hill is a living history museum devoted to the preservation of its buildings and artifacts and the interpretation of the history of Northeast Wisconsin and its people. Our purpose is to provide an educational experience that encourages visitor awareness, understanding and appreciation of the history of the region."

The site offers information on upcoming events, the park itself, and a variety of educational programs offered by the park.

Raynham Historical Society

Description

The Raynham Historical Society, Inc. is an organization of individuals with a common interest in preserving and perpetuating the history of the town of Raynham, Massachusetts. The objectives of this Society shall be:
1.to engage in the collection, holding, and preserving of documents, papers, furniture, pictures, data both personal and real, books, memoirs and all other matters relating to Raynham history;
2.to encourage research into the records and identify old landmarks; and
3.to perpetuate the history of the citizens of Raynham, their manner, customs, and achievements and any other activity that might historically enhance the town.

Peel Mansion Museum & Heritage Gardens [AR]

Description

The Peel House Foundation works to preserve one of Arkansas's most treasured pieces of architecture and landscaping, the Peel Mansion, built in 1875, and the surrounding rose gardens. In addition to the house, the Foundation also offers other attractions, such as an 1855 log cabin which has been converted into a living history museum. This house stood near the site of the Battle of Pea Ridge.

The site offers a small photo gallery of roughly 20 pictures, general information for visitors, and a calendar of events.

Jerome County Historical Society and Museum and Idaho Farm and Ranch Agricultural Museum [ID]

Description

The Society operates a local history museum, the Jerome County Historical Museum, as well as the Idaho Farm and Ranch Agricultural Museum. The latter displays many specimens of old farm equipment and original buildings from the surrounding area, including an exhibit from the World War II Minidoka Japanese Relocation Camp that was located at Hunt, ID in Jerome County.

The society and Jerome County Historical Museum offer exhibits, tours, and research library access; the Agricultural Museum offers exhibits, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).
