Radnor Historical Society and the Finley House [PA]

Description

The Radnor Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Radnor, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area. To this end, the society operates the 1789 Finley House. The residence houses a circa 1800 kitchen, a local history exhibit room, the society's library, archives, and a bedroom furnished in the style of circa 1840. The grounds also include a wagon house, which holds historic vehicles, and gardens. Collection highlights include a Conestoga wagon.

Clearwater Historical Museum [ID]

Description

The Clearwater Historical Museum seeks to preserve and share the history of the Clearwater River country, Idaho. This area includes Clearwater, Nez Perce, Lewis, Shoshone, and Idaho Counties. Collections include Nez Perce, Chinese, gold mining, logging, medical, prehistoric, barbershop, and hotel artifacts, in addition to historic firearms, a stamp mill, and china.

Howard County Historical Society and Museums [NE]

Description

The Howard County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Howard County, Nebraska. To this end, the society operates the Saint Paul Transportation Museum and Village Depot, the Veterans Museum, the Historical Village, and the Gruber House. The transportation museum is located within a 1908 railway depot. The village consists of a historic schoolhouse, containing local history exhibits; a historic store, containing frontier life exhibits; a forge, complete with blacksmithing demonstrations and exhibits; and the depot, which contains the transportation museum. The 1908 Gruber House contains the Veterans Museum, as well as exhibits about Native American life, Howard County religion, Victorian era life, and Jean Catharine Potts. Potts (1910-1999) was a nationally recognized mystery author. Her works include Go, Lively Rose and The Evil Wish.

The society offers period rooms, exhibits, and blacksmithing demonstrations.

Museum of Automobiles [AR]

Description

The Museum of Automobiles presents historic automobiles, related memorabilia, historic arcade machines, an antique gas pump, a player piano, and antique firearms. The museum permanent collection consists of 30 vehicles—with others on loan from locations throughout the U.S. Vehicles on display date from 1904 through 1969.

Brockton Historical Society and Museums [MA]

Description

The Brockton Historical Society operates several museums relevant to the history of Brockton, Massachusetts. These include a fire museum; shoe museum; and a historic residence, known as The Homestead. The 1767 Homestead has not been restored to a specific period's appearance. It contains a local history library, as well as exhibits on Thomas Edison, shoes, and heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano (1923-1969). Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum [SC]

Description

The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum presents U.S. Naval and air history and technology via a collection of Navy vessels and World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and modern military planes. The USS Yorktown, a World War II aircraft carrier; 24 historical military aircraft; the USS Laffey, a World War II destroyer; the USS Clamagore, a Cold War Balao-class submarine; the USCGC Ingham, a World War II and drug bust cutter; a Congressional Medal of Honor exhibit; a Vietnam War Naval Support Base Camp replica; and the Cold War Submarine Memorial are all located on site.

The museum offers traditional and interactive exhibits, guided group tours, self-guided tours, a youth overnight program, curriculum-based history and science educational programs for students, scavenger hunts for students, youth leadership and history seminars, two snack bars, and food options in the mess hall. The mess hall only offers food between April and November. The USS Laffey, USS Clamagore, and USCGC Ingham offer little to no wheelchair accessibility. Groups must contain at least 15 paid visitors.

The USS Laffey is closed until further notice for repairs.

Seacoast Fire Museum [NH]

Description

The Seacoast Fire Museum is located in Hampton, NH, along New Hampshire's coastline. The museum chronicles the history of the Seacoast Fireman's Union and features a 19th century fire pumper along with other antique firefighting equipment such as a Whiting Light.

Museum Village [NY]

Description

Museum Village is a living history site depicting 19th-century life. The site includes a replica 1805 schoolhouse, general store, drug store, 18th-century cabin, weave shop, candle shop, broom shop, blacksmith shop, wagon shop, print shop, pottery shop, costume exhibit building, and natural history building. The natural history building houses a mastodon skeleton.

The village offers interactive and traditional exhibits, costumed interpreters, demonstrations, hands-on activities, a summer day camp, five curriculum-based workshops for students, and picnic tables. Workshops topics include candle making, open hearth cooking, stenciling, printing, and natural dyeing. The site is only partially wheelchair accessible.

Locust Grove: The Samuel Morse Historic Site [NY]

Description

The 180-acre Locust Grove is the estate of Samuel F.B. Morse (1791-1872), patent holder on the electromagnetic telegraph and creator of an early version of Morse code. The site contains an Italianate villa, housing a collection of European and American art and decorative arts. The grounds hold gardens. Exhibits include telegraph technology and paintings by Morse himself. Morse lived on the estate between 1847 and his death in 1872.

The site offers an introductory film, exhibits, period rooms, five curriculum-based educational programs, a summer day camp, guided tours of the villa, 100-minute group gardens and grounds tours, 2-hour group villa and gardens tours, and trails. Reservations are required for all group tours.

San Benito County Historical Society, Museum, and Historical Park [CA]

Description

The San Benito County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of San Benito County, California. To this end, the society operates a museum within a 1909 Prairie Style home, originally built for pharmacist George Wapple. The society also operates a historical park which houses historic vehicles and a variety of historic buildings—three homes, a bar, a school, a print shop, a jail, and a barn.

The museum offers exhibits and tours. Arrangements must be made with the museum for all tours. The park offers exhibits and guided tours. Appointments are required for tours. The society also offers research library access the second Monday of every month.
