Camp Hancock State Historic Site and Museum [ND]

Description

This site preserves part of a military installation established as Camp Greeley in 1872 to provide protection for work gangs then building the Northern Pacific Railroad. The camp's name was changed to Camp Hancock in 1873. A log headquarters building still stands on the site; it has been enlarged and remodeled several times, and the logs have been concealed by clapboard siding. The building serves as an interpretive museum for artifacts and information about local history.

Pacific Northwest Truck Museum [OR]

Description

"In the Pacific Northwest Truck Museum, you will see some of the great working vehicles that developed the Pacific Northwest. These wonderfully restored antique trucks, parts and memorabilia also show the significant and unique innovations in the development of trucks brought about by the longer distances and rough terrain of this part of the country." In addition to the large collection of trucks, the museum offers an annual antique truck show.

Owls Head Transportation Museum [ME]

Description

The Owls Head Transportation Museum, located in Owls Head, ME, has more than 100 historic aircraft, automobiles, bicycles, carriages, and engines which are on permanent display. Overall, the museum "has one of the finest collections of pioneer-era aircraft and automobiles in the world." In addition, the museum is host to the Lang Education Center and Library, a research library containing 5000 books and over half a million photographs from local sources and the National Air and Space Museum. The Library is open by appointment.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum [FL]

Description

One of the oldest car museums in the world, according to its website, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum holds over 100 automobiles, including makes from almost every manufacturer to compete in the United States car market, spanning over 100 years. In addition to vehicles, the museum houses a small arcade of antique games.

The museum offers exhibits, an antique games arcade, and tours for school groups. The website offers an events calendar, visitor information, and information about the other services offered by the museum.

Hollis Historical Society [NH]

Description

"Our purpose is to stimulate interest in the history of Hollis, New Hampshire, to acquire and preserve memorabilia and historical data significant to the Town of Hollis, to present interesting and informative programs for our members and friends, and to maintain the Ruth E. Wheeler House." The Hollis Historical Society maintains two museums, the Wheeler House - which is a historic house museum focusing on life in Hollis in the early 20th century, and the Always Ready Engine House, which focuses on the history of firefighting in Hollis and firefighting technology.

Seattle Architecture Foundation [WA]

Description

The Seattle Architecture Foundation is dedicated to advancing public awareness and appreciation of fine Seattle-area architecture. To this end, the foundation hosts a variety of educational events, including exhibits located in the foundation's headquarters, walking tours, and youth education projects. In addition, the foundation works as an advocate for impressive architecture throughout the Seattle metro area.

Kinzua Bridge State Park [PA]

Description

"The 329-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park is in McKean County and features remnants of the 2,053-foot railroad bridge (viaduct) that was a National Engineering Landmark. A tornado has knocked down much of the bridge." Currently, work is being done to preserving what remains of the bridge, and the future of the bridge and state park is up in the air.

The site offers historical information, visitor information, and a photo gallery featuring 25 photographs of the bridge shortly after it was hit with a tornado.

California Department of Parks & Recreation, Office of Historic Preservation [CA]

Description

"The mission of the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and the State Historical Resources Commission (SHRC), in partnership with the people of California and governmental agencies, is to preserve and enhance California's irreplaceable historic heritage as a matter of public interest so that its vital legacy of cultural, educational, recreational, aesthetic, economic, social, and environmental benefits will be maintained and enriched for present and future generations." To accomplish this mission, the California OHP and SHRC have a number of programs designed to reward and encourage preservation efforts statewide, including "California Main Street," a program dedicated to revitalizing downtowns across the state, as well as a variety of preservation grants awarded to citizens and organizations focused on preserving historic structures or landmarks.

Discovery Museum [CA]

Description

"The Discovery Museum of Sacramento is a family-focused educational institution dedicated to enriching the lives of local residents and visitors to the Sacramento Region by encouraging the exploration of history, science, and space." The museum is split into two entities, the Challenger Learning Center, which is an interactive space mission simulator which consists of a realistic Mission Control Center and spacecraft, and the Science and Space Center, which is a traditional museum focusing on scientific discovery. The Challenger Learning Center is primarily a children's educational center, and is only open to public groups by appointment. The Science and Space Center features a variety of exhibits, including live animals and a planetarium.
