Description

The Camp 6 Logging Museum, located in Tacoma, Washington, is dedicated to preserving the history of the logging industry in Washington. More specifically, the museum focuses on the period from the 1880s to the 1940s, known as the "steam era" of logging. The museum has been set up like a traditional logging camp, with trains connecting the various working sites - which function as the museum's exhibits. In this way, visitors to the museum are completely immersed in a realistic re-creation of a turn of the century logging camp.

Wilmington Railroad Museum [NC]

Description

The Wilmington Railroad Museum seeks to provide visitors with a fun and educational experience regarding rail in Wilmington, NC, with a special emphasis on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In 2007, the museum was moved into its current headquarters, a historic 1880s railroad freight warehouse. The museum features a variety of exhibits, a library of press articles which are available to researchers on location, and a children's area featuring interactive exhibits and model trains.

Texas Fire Museum [TX]

Description

"The Texas Fire Museum was founded in August 1999 to preserve the old Dallas Fire Department Maintenance Facility and to establish a fire apparatus museum that serves as an educational resource for the community. Presently, we have over 60 antique apparatus on display." In addition to the displays and exhibits offered by the museum, the museum also seeks to help individuals and organizations preserve vintage pieces of firefighting equipment.

West Virginia State Museum / Cultural Center [WV]

Description

The West Virginia State Museum and Cultural Center opened in 1976 in order to showcase West Virginia's artistic, cultural, and historic heritage. While the lower level of the museum is presently closed for renovation, the upper floors are still open to the public, and visitors can view the art and history exhibits in the Art Gallery, the Lobby Gallery, and the Balcony Gallery. In addition, the State Archives Library and the offices of the Commission on the Arts and the State Historic Preservation Office are also housed in the museum.

Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and Aviation Museum [CA]

Description

The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation was founded in 1999, and has a mission to support the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar Command Museum. The Foundation does this mainly by providing volunteers and additional funding to support limited Department of Defense funding. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is one of only four certified Marine Corps Command Museums, and is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the history of the U.S. Marine Corps aviation. The museum boasts a collection of over 40 vintage aircraft, an extensive research library, photos, video, and valuable memorabilia and artifacts.

Portage County Historical Society [WI]

Description

The Portage County Historical Society was founded with the intention to preserve, advance, and disseminate the history of Portage County, Wisconsin. To this end, "the Society currently operates four museums, maintains a large archives housed at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point's Archive Center, is developing its own research center, and maintains the Malcolm Rosholt Online Archives on this website to disseminate knowledge of the history of Portage County, Wisconsin." The museums are the Heritage Park, a historic park that gives visitors a glimpse of early frontier life, the Beth Israel Synagogue, which chronicles the history of Portage County's Jewish community, the Rising Star Mill, which gives visitors a tour of turn of the century industry, and Fire Station #2, which was scheduled to open in 2008 and contains a collection of vintage firefighting equipment.

S.P.& S. Railway Historical Society [WA]

Description

"The Spokane Portland and Seattle Railway Historical Society was founded in 1981 to preserve the history of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway and disseminate information to its membership about the railway and its affiliate lines including the Oregon Trunk, the Oregon Electric, United Railways, Astoria & Columbia River, and the Gales Creek & Wilson River." The society also puts out a variety of publications throughout the year, many of which are focused on modelers, who compose a majority of society members.

Griffith Historical Park & Museum [IN]

Description

The Griffith Historical Society, founded in 1983, was empowered by a Griffith Town Council resolution to preserve the history of the town of Griffith. At that time, ownership and operation of the Depot Museum was given to the Society by joint action of the Council and the Community Spirit Organization. In 1994, the Society purchased the land adjacent to the Depot to create an Historical Park in tribute to Griffith's railroading past. The Griffith Historical Park was formally dedicated in May, 1995. The Park and Museum are open on the first Sunday in June till the last Sunday in August from 2-4pm and throughout the year for special tours.

Founded in 1983, Chicora is a heritage preservation organization located in Columbia, South Carolina. Chicora focuses on archaeological and historical research throughout the Southeastern United States, public education in South Carolina, and work in conservation and preservation with museums, libraries, historic organizations, historic libraries, and private citizens. Chicora also creates a wide variety of publications, including publications of archaeological research, and preservation guides.
